Sharing Too Much If You Could Get Away With It

The other day there was a trending hashtag on Twitter called #IfICouldGetAwayWithIt and it is curious to see what people add to this trend.  I am surprised at how many people blatantly mention they would kill someone, or that they would rob a bank, steal or commit crimes.

image

The funny thing is we all have perhaps thought or mentioned it to a close relative/spouse…etc that if you could rob a bank, or somehow get away with something that makes your life easier you may.  I do however think it strange that so many people would just blatantly say stuff online which is publicly visible to anyone?  I mean even if joking or just being part of it, this stuff gets added to the “anyone can find online” pile.image

Let’s say this was Facebook and an employer say a Bank read that you broadcast you would steal, rob a bank if you could get away with it.  Wouldn’t this at least make a bank think twice about hiring you?  What would assure them you wouldn’t try to skim money at some point?

Sorry, there are some broadcasts and secrets better left in your own head and not shared publicly for the world to see in this bloggers opinion.

Why Ever Buy Cables from Retail Stores?

Seriously, when I needed a 50’ spool of Cat5 or Ethernet cabling, and I needed a new HDMI cable for my Roku XDS to my LCD TV I was browsing the various retail stores (Home Depot, Best Buy and even Walmart) but truth is that these stores have prices on cabling about 5-10x what you really need to be paying for it.

Numerous computer magazines have tested and proven that even the cheapest HDMI cables work just fine and the same with Cat5.  Why not spend less than $5 to get both a 6’ HDMI cable and a 50’ Spool of Cat5e?

[easyazon-image-link asin=”B0002L5R78″ alt=”HDMI Cable 2M (6 Feet)” src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41is%2B997KUL._SL160_.jpg” align=”left” width=”160″ height=”160″]I would have spent nearly $30 dollars, 6x that price had I bought the same cabling from Walmart’s cheapest brand and I would have paid more than $60 if I bought high end HDMI cables with gold connectors on top. Not worth it in my opinion, save the money and buy cheap cables. Amazon.com pretty much has them the cheapest I have found anywhere.

Gaming on Labor Day Weekend

Spent more time gaming this weekend than I have in a long time and it felt pretty good honestly.  I alternated between playing Magic the Gathering: Duel of the Planeswalkers 2012 on the PC and various Xbox 360 game demo’s with the kids.

We did learn that Ghostbusters Sanctum of Slime is a fun 3 player game and the boys want to play more than the demo in the future.

Meanwhile, Ilomilo was probably the most fun 2 player puzzle game I have played in years.  I haven’t played Portal 2 yet, but my nearly 5 year old and I played through all 9 levels of the Ilomilo demo and the puzzle games were fun and the simple mission to reunite Ilo and Milo together was a fun concept and my son was so excited every time we found a way to get together.  There aren’t a lot of kid friendly games for the Xbox 360 compared to the Wii, but Ilomilo is outstanding and highly recommended.

I also finally played the Batman: Arkham Asylum game and was very impressed with the gameplay, this was my first time playing it and I know it is critically acclaimed but I just haven’t gotten around to it.  The demo piqued my interest and I may pick it up in the bargain bin at some point, I definitely may want to get Batman: Arkham City when it comes out but this would be for the PC.

All in all, did a lot of chores and a lot of gaming but one thing I didn’t get much time to do was blogging this weekend.  It kind of felt good to take a break from the blogs just to game.

Bought a 3rd Roku XDS Box Instead of Roku 2

So when I needed a device to stream video from Netflix and other Internet sources like Hulu Plus, Crackle, 1080p Showcase and even my Picasa Web Albums or USB video files I chose a Roku XDS box last December.

Since then I had bought a 2nd Roku box for my kids bedroom so they can stream netflix in their bedroom, this is cheaper than paying for a separate cable or dish installation and receiver and Netflix has a great selection of kids stuff anyway.

When I needed to furnish our little vacation home in CA, I decided to do without cable or satellite TV at all this time, this home will not have anything but Roku and streaming internet.

imageThe thing is with Roku XDS and the various Roku private channels you can watch many live TV broadcasts including news, and even get segments clips from local news stations on Roku.  I can get several Phoenix local stations with the Nowhere TV Channel which offers dozens of channels with media clips from various network programs.

The Roku XDS and Roku 2 XDS are virtually the same price at $99 though the Roku XDS (1st generation) is now $89.99 on Amazon.com.  The difference is that the Roku 2 is smaller and also adds gaming and other functionality.  If you look at the reviews however and the purpose of the machine, the system has too little RAM and when the free Angry Birds came is installed on it it can have flaky problems and require resets according to the reviews. Though it has the motion sensing controller and some other neat features.

I personally don’t need my gaming to be included in my Roku, I want a Roku that can do streaming video and would prefer the focus on building and getting contracts with companies to add more channels for live streaming broadcasts.  Roku also needs to work with Google so the YouTube channel can be added officially and the disputes about ads in video be resolved properly.

For streaming Netflix and other media Roku XDS has been a gem of a system, it is small and easy to port around.  The Roku XDS has HDMI, Component and Composite inputs to accommodate any television and includes optical audio out for receivers as well.

I wouldn’t have bought a 3rd Roku XDS if I didn’t think they were great devices.

Ten Things You May Not Know About Stink Bugs

1.     They are a relatively new arrival in this country

Although most insects, such as roaches, have a long history of being annoying pests that get into our homes, stink bugs only arrived on our shores in the late 1990’s. More precisely, they were first found in a field in Altoona Pennsylvania in the spring of 1998. It is currently thought that they hitched a ride over on shipping crates from several countries in Southeast Asia where they are known to be a hugely problematic species.

2.     Unlike many other pests, they are primarily a threat in fall and winter

Generally speaking, the greatest threat to your home comes during the spring and summer as the warm weather draws many different species of insect out of hibernation and into the home in search of food.

The stink bug, however, is different in that they are not particularly problematic during the warmer months for homeowners as they are primarily an outdoor pest. Although as the temperature drops, they will often seek out the warmth of a home in order to hibernate for the winter.

This obviously leads to some issues, as they will almost always enter a home in very large numbers, often exceeding several hundred individual insects. One significant problem is that the bugs will be able to enter the house through any size crack in the exterior siding or baseboards. This alone makes it very hard to prepare your home in anticipation of their arrival.

3.     Their name is in no way a misnomer

Brown Marmorated Stink BugThere are few things more offensive to the nose than the defensive odor emitted by these bugs when they are threatened or harmed in any way. The product of a gland in their abdomen, the release of this spray will not only repel any predators close to the source but will also call in reinforcements from other bugs in the vicinity.

Because they have such a potent and unpleasant odor at their disposal, and because it has the potential to attract many more insects, it is best to not attempt to dispose of these bugs through squashing or otherwise harming them like you might with a roach or an ant.

4.     Although infestations are annoying, they will not reproduce in your home

If there is any good news about these troublesome creatures, it is that although they can overrun a home in short order, they will not be able to reproduce inside the home, thus keeping the total number of bugs down. They are known to only reproduce outdoors, because their eggs require sunlight to properly grow.

Because of this fact, they will tend to lay their eggs in bunches of 20-30 at a time on the undersides of leaves and branches. The young insects once hatched will then be able to eat through any fruit that they might find on those same plants, giving them a head start as the new generation of bugs.

The emergence of new bugs is generally seen in the early portion of spring and will then lay new eggs in the time between May and August before searching for a comfortable place to hibernate. This again is when your home is at the greatest risk for an infestation.

5.     They are a major agricultural pest and will eat virtually any crop

Since they first arrived in the country, their most destructive impact has been    on farmers and other involved in the agricultural industry. Their effects have mostly been felt in the Mid-Atlantic States such as Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland although they are quickly spreading throughout the entire country.

The most destructive effects thus far have been on crops such as apples, peaches, and citrus fruits. This is because they are drawn to crops that contain a high level of natural sugars, and will quickly decimate any field that they can gain a foothold in. Their presence has caused several hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage so far, and this is only likely to get worse as their geographic footprint grows each year.

6.     They are quite resistant to many different pesticides

One of the first things that many farmers noticed when first confronted with these pests was how they showed a strong natural resistance to the major agricultural pesticides in use today, even without having prior exposure to them. This has made the problem of stink bugs much worse in many respects, as this resistance obviously makes protecting the year’s crop much more difficult. So far the most effective method of control to come into widespread use has been the trap, which has shown itself to be much more effective than pesticides.

7.     There are over 4,700 species of stink bugs on the planet

Out of this large number, so far there are only about two hundred different species of the bug that have been identified and catalogued in the United States. The most common species and the one that has caused the most trouble in this country are known as the Brown Marmorated stink bug.

These are approximately one inch long and are notable for the dark brown coloring they exhibit all over their bodies, which is often streaked with light gray or lighter brown markings on the antennae.

8.     They have no natural predators in the U.S.

Part of the reason that they have grown to become such a large pest so quickly is the fact that because they first arrived roughly a decade ago there are no true natural predators to help keep their numbers down.

In addition the defensive liquid that gives them their foul smelling name is also quite acidic and will present an unpleasant surprise for any mammal or bird that might try to prey on them. Once this fact is added to their natural pesticide resistance, it becomes clear that they are likely here to stay as a pest species.

9.     There are a few things you can do to make your house less attractive to them

Because their primary reason for coming into a home is to protect themselves from cold temperatures, they often will be more attracted to light colored houses or those with a large amount of sun exposure.

Although repainting your home is likely too drastic a step, you can keep curtains drawn and if possible keep the temperature inside your home a bit lower than usual during the fall months to keep any bugs that enter your home from thinking that it is an ideal spot and calling in more insects to join their inchoate infestation.

During the summer months you should also think about making a few changes to the exterior of your home in preparation for fall such as caulking any cracks and making sure that windows and doors are all tightly sealed and flush with their frames. Making sure there are no cracks or crevices exposed to the outdoors will make it much harder for these bugs to enter your home in the first place.

10.     Despite being annoying, they pose no real threat to humans

There is no doubt that they smell terrible and that an infestation in your home is extremely unpleasant, but if there’s any good news about these bugs it is the fact that they are in no way dangerous to humans. They do not usually bite unless directly threatened, and are not poisonous. In fact, in several African nations such as Zambia and Mozambique some species of stink bug are even eaten as a delicacy.

Needing a Dog Fence Built

So one of the things I am researching over the next few weeks is how to build a fencing system around a property to keep the dogs from escaping the property.  The issue I have found is the area is pretty narrow and most pre-built fencing structures have a generic 60” width, I need to have something built that is about 10’ long and only 30” wide or so.

I don’t really have the time or the knowledge to build something myself, so may end up looking for a contractor or starting with Lowes which will come out and do a free estimate for fencing and can do the installation.

I haven’t decided on whether we would use a wooden fence or chain link fence, personally I don’t think chain link fences are very aesthetically pleasing and I would prefer a fencing that has some quaint charm and functionality but I don’t want to pay an arm and a leg either.

Just something to keep 2 Boston Terriers contained and high enough to prevent them from jumping over it should suffice.

Something like this would have been great, but it just is too wide to fit in the narrow side area I need fenced.

Replaced Liquid CPU Cooler

My iBuyPower system started making some gurgling sounds and it wasn’t hard to trace the noise to the liquid cooling system hooked up to the CPU.  A quick call to iBuyPower and they sent me a replacement liquid CPU cooling system to replace myself, I haven’t done this type of part installation manually before but have built many PC’s in the past and figured I could handle it.

Turns out these liquid CPU systems are pretty well self contained now, and just removing the grill/fan from the case and the part that sits on top of the CPU directly was pretty easy.

IMG_0118

I installed the new one and only issue I ran into was that the new liquid CPU fan system had a 4 pin connector and my motherboard had a 3 pin fan connection, I did some research and figured out how to make it work but it will keep the fan on at all times instead of allowing variable speed which is fine for this 1 fan, this wasn’t the fan over the CPU itself but the fan going to the rear of the case anyhow.

Driving by a Wildfire

While driving back from San Diego to Arizona on the I-8 on Sunday afternoon we saw a fire in the distance, I can’t say for sure but there was a thunderstorm that had just rolled in and I believe the fire was started by a lightning strike.

As we drove up to the fire we realized that it had come dangerously close to the I-8 and I snapped photo’s of it as we drove right past.

Right after this photo the flames were visibly leaping over the hill and racing forward toward the I-8.  I was surprised at just how fast this wildfire was spreading and it made you really consider how dangerous and out of control they get.

We took some video as well:

The Thing Remake is really a Prequel

John Carpenter’s The Thing was one of my all time favorite horror movies as a kid and even to this day holds a candle above all the gore-fests that exist today though the special effects are aging they weren’t done with computers so they had a creepier more realistic appeal to them that left me with many nightmares as a kid.

imageSo at first I thought when I saw there was a new version of The Thing I was figuring this would be another stupid Hollywood remake that botched the original.

I did however find out that The Thing 2011 movie is a prequel and just isn’t titled differently because they couldn’t think of a good title.  The movie pays homage to the original and when I saw the trailer the synthesizer music sounded right out of John Carpenter’s version of the film.

You have to see this trailer if you are a fan of The Thing, either you will be annoyed or entranced and want to see it:

I know I want to see this movie just to see how good it was.  I heard the remake of Fright Night was pretty good too.

Diamond Planet Orbiting a Pulsar?

Read a really cool story last week on ibitimes about researchers potentially discovering a planet so dense they believe it is entirely made from carbon and therefore must be crystalline and quite possible a complete diamond.

This pulsar exists about 4,000 lightyears away so there won’t be any expeditions to mine it anytime soon, but what’s even more fascinating is that pulsars which are dead neutron stars average only 12 miles in diameter and for an object that small to have an orbiting planet seems profound in itself.
