Google Alerts Includes Twitter Status

For the first time a Google Alert for my DragonBlogger showed a Twitter status update which I have never seen happen before.

image

I don’t know if it I something new or just me, but I have "dragonblogger" mentioned in a lot of tweets and I don’t usually see a Google alert back from them so not sure why I saw one today specifically.

I have noticed that Google Alerts seems to be a bit wonky and doesn’t always show alerts, or sometimes when it does I can’t actually find the link back from the site when clicking on the link.  Not sure if anyone else sees this issue as well.

One Week to Father’s Day

With one week to Father’s day I found my kids excited and hovering around their computers saying they were looking up a gift for me online, they shooed me out of the room not wanting me to see what gift they were going to pick out and I know they were conspiring with their mom to pick out something for Father’s day.

image

Watches make traditional Father’s day gifts and remember getting one a few years back, it wasn’t one of the Bulova Precisionist Watches but it was still nice though it wasn’t waterproof and I soon found out the hard way when one of my favorite watches stopped working after swimming in shallow ocean water while wearing it.

I had since gotten a replacement but really I won’t wear a watch now that isn’t waterproof anymore.  I still prefer quickly looking at the time on my watch instead of having to dig out my blackberry to tell what time it is.  It seems a little more elegant to simply look down at your wrist to tell the time instead of pulling out your phone from my holster clip.

I wonder what I will get for Father’s day this year?  What are my readers getting their dads?

Rendezvous in Del Mar

Always on the lookout for new restaurants and willing to try new things my wife and I decided to visit Rendezvous in Del Mar which is a Chinese fusion restaurant and it also had a fairly robust gluten free menu.

Usually when I go out to a restaurant with my wife who is Gluten Free for health reasons I tend to order gluten free items as well.  We share dishes so I don’t to limit her ability to try my foods and vice versa.  It works out pretty well and I also get introduced to GF foods and add my own feedback and see whether I like them.

We started by ordering the GF Chicken Lettuce Wraps as an appetizer, they were good but not great.  Personally I thought the P.F. Chang’s chicken lettuce wraps taste better, but the lettuce leaf’s were fresh and huge.  The main course however wasn’t disappointing, I ordered the gluten free Shrimp with Lobster sauce and it was delicious.

gluten free shriimp with lobster sauce The sauce was delicate, broccoli crisp and it was satisfying.  We also ordered the gluten free chicken fried rice which was also good, the chicken was coated with light corn starch and taste good.

My wife had the Chef’s Shrimp Saute which wasn’t bad, but my wife and I both agreed it didn’t taste as good as the Shrimp with Lobster sauce.

Rendezvous also offers a selection of gluten free sake (bottle purchase) and gluten free beers as well.  If you are in the mood for Chinese food and want a gluten free menu, Rendezvous was worth a try.

One other note, is they have dishes using Konnyaku noodles which are very low carbohydrate and calorie noodle dishes related to the Taro root, I didn’t get a chance to try any of the dishes but this makes for some low calorie and carbohydrate dishes if you are in looking for an option there as well.

Let Them Eat Broccoli: Top Tips For Charming Picky Eaters

There are few things more worrying for anyone caring for young children then a fussy eater. It’s so easy to become desperate, when your kid won’t eat anything but chocolate, ice cream and sweetcorn. Or if they refuse to eat anything green. At all. Ever. The battle of wills can be intense as parents and carers of all stripes find they have to make an impossible decision: affect a will of iron and potentially face their child going hungry, or cave in, set a terrible precedent and risk the kid’s malnutrition as they exist on a diet of Rice Krispie Squares and cake.

However, this needn’t be an either/or situation. Lord knows there are enough books, blogs and articles about how to negotiate this tricky childcare issue. As a childcare professional, I’ve read them all and I believe I’ve isolated the most effective advice out there when it comes to dealing with itinerant candy-driven toddlers. Here are the fruits of my labours:

  1. Assert Who’s Boss (But Pick Your Battles)

Anyone who looks after children knows that this noble undertaking is pretty much made of compromises and negotiation. However, when it comes to helping kids eat healthily, it’s important to realise both that you are the person in charge and that winning small battles bit-by-bit is the only way to break bad habits. For that reason, don’t foist seventeen different types of organic produce on your young charge. Yes, nutrition is important and following a colour coded scheme of vegetable servings might seem the way forward, but frankly, getting a child to develop a taste for one vegetable is much more important than offering them a rainbow of choices (that will only end up on the floor anyway). Kids dig routine. Give it to them. Offer limited options. Peas. Carrots. Beans. Experiment, sure but pace yourself. This is the long game.

  1. The ‘Just One Bite’ Principle

When it comes to training kids to try new things, it’s important to note that it takes 30 bites to develop a taste for something. With that in mind, persevere with foods, even if they’ve been rejected a few times. The ‘Just One Bite’ principle comes into its own here – you can offer a small reward in exchange for minimal co-operation. If no co-operation is offered, then you wait them out. Some people call this bribery but those people are probably childless. Good incentives to offer include: 5 minutes extra of child’s favourite limited activity (playing computer games, watching a youtube clip etc.) or get creative and offer a whole incentive scheme: little star stickers, adding up to a treat for consistent good behaviour. Keep the rewards small, manageable and don’t reward with unhealthy food, no matter how tempting. It’s important to move away psychologically from the idea of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods.

  1. Give Older Children Agency…..

As babies become toddlers, they start to crave a measure of control over their environment. If you give your toddler an element of choice, they become more likely to ‘own’ that choice and actually partake of their vegetables. Take your kids to the supermarket and get them to pick out the veg that looks the best – this can actually be quite a fun game of identifying colours and shapes. Then, when it comes to mealtime, offer them a choice of two vegetable and honour whichever decision they make.

  1. ….But Know When To Take Choice Away

Sometimes kids will flat-out refuse to touch their plate. If you find that mealtime seems likely to stretch into the next month, you can offer an alternative meal but make sure that you’re consistent. Do not let your child dictate the alternative – offer them something small but nutritious: a bowl of cereal, a small sandwich, a fruit salad. This meal can then become your ‘default’ if the dinnertime battles continue. Once a pattern is established – a pattern in which the balance of power is very much in your arena – you can begin more complex negotiations, return to the ‘Just One Bite’ strategy.

  1. Keep a sense of humour

Odds are, you are covered in Weetabix. Embrace this. Or at least accept it as part of the process. Mealtimes are a time to exercise maximum patience and fortitude. Perhaps you won’t win every battle, but you will win the war. Good luck, soldier. All power to your broccoli spear.

If I Won a $10,000 Apple Gift Card from Crucial

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Crucial.com for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

If I won a $10,000 Apple gift card from Crucial I would certainly use it to get top notch laptops for every member of my family (including my Mother in Law) these laptops would be probably all dual boot so that we could play various Windows games (unfortunately Mac OS still lacking in the latest game support).

So I entered the Crucial Memory Sweepstakes just to see if I was lucky enough to win, honestly I rarely ever win prizes from contests that are “random” or luck based.  But with an offer of a $10,000 Apple gift card just to complete a small survey and they would match it by donating a $10,000 Apple gift card in your name to TechSoup® Global I couldn’t pass up the chance to enter the survey.

image

For some reason I had forgotten that Micron and Crucial were the same company and this helped with some of the survey questions when finding answers.

As far as memory, crucial makes memory for every model of laptop or desktop that exists practically and you never can have too much memory.  The standard now is that you should have no less than 4GB of RAM if running 64bit Windows 7.  If you use Google Chrome or Firefox and have a lot of tabs open you can easily consume 1.5GB of RAM just from your various browser processes.  If you are a gamer, it is even more important to have a ton of RAM.  Diablo 3 for example is said to be a HUGE RAM hog and that you should have at least 12gb or more to help reduce lag from having the game read data from disk.

With 16GB of RAM being under $200 if your motherboard supports it and you are on a 64bit Operating System, there is no reason you shouldn’t max out your memory!

The Slowing Garage Door

My garage door is acting funnier lately and when it was first installed it would zip up and down with relative speed.  Now as it is nearly 4 years old it would seem the garage door parts are aging and the door lags a little before kicking off and opens and closes a little more slowly and with a few jerks.

I WD-40 the joints, wheels and such but don’t know too much about garage door openers so I am not sure which parts are really the cause of the problem but for now as long as it works it works.  It particularly gets worse in the winter where it is colder and it becomes slower.

Broken Garage Door Opener

In the end I probably will end up paying for someone to come out and fix it if it breaks or becomes unusable.  I don’t even know what replacement garage door opener I would get at this point.  I have only ever had 2 and I just paid to have them installed at the time I purchased the houses. My 3 car garage door only has an automatic opener for the 2 car side anyway, the third bay is still manual.

Fortunately, if the automatic garage door should fail to open it is so easy to disengage the automatic and just manually open the door.  One thing about owning a home is after three, four or five years you start really seeing parts needing to be maintained, replaced and it starts becoming a chore just to keep up with all the wearing appliances.

NOAA Apps for Summer Safety

Summertime is a time of family vacations, road trips and outdoor adventures – where the smell of barbeque and sunscreen is never far away. For many places, summertime is a blessed reprieve from the harsh conditions of long winter months and families are quick to take advantage of ideal weather conditions. But like any time of year, being armed with pertinent information can be vital in protecting against unforeseen events and conditions that can be disruptive or downright dangerous.

Fortunately, there is a service geared specifically toward protecting people from these unknowns. The National Weather Service (NWS), also known as the NOAA, operates informational broadcasts to keep people safe year round, providing important information about weather conditions, road conditions, and other vital statistics.

These broadcasts can include information about:

  • Natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes
  • Evacuation orders from areas at risk of fires, flooding, or natural disasters
  • Weather advisories and warnings of oncoming storm systems or hazardous conditions
  • Weather forecasts
  • AMBER alerts
  • Environmental hazards including spills or chemical releases
  • 911 telephone outages

These NWS broadcasts are a public service offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

How to Stay Tuned to the NWS Broadcasts

Being aware of how to access the NWS broadcasts no matter your location keeps you armed against unforeseen environmental hazards. The NWS broadcasts are accessed by means of specific receiver frequencies that cannot be accessed by regular AM/FM radios. Fortunately technology has stepped up to the plate, providing a wide range of options to give people the ability to stay connected to this vitally important emergency resource.

The NWS Broadcasts can be accessed by:

  • Standalone Receivers – they often include AM/FM bands and handheld or desktop models are available to suit specific lifestyles.
  • Multi-Band/Function Receivers – bundled with a variety of features, these receivers can include scanners, CB radios, or VHF Marine radios depending on the model.

Regardless of what type of receiver you choose be sure to pay particular attention to the features recommended by the NOAA.

  • A tone alarm
  • Battery backup
  • External antenna jack
  • SAME technology
  • Customized alert events

For individuals who have a smart phone or device, the NOAA now offers an app for iPhone and severe weather alert apps are also available for Android devices – allowing instant access wherever you have service. But plan ahead because when traveling in more rural locations, a secondary backup device must be used to ensure uninterrupted access to this important information.

Have a Plan

The NWS broadcasts are just one of the available tools to protect you from these emergencies but they are no substitute for having an emergency plan. The weather forecasting provided by the NWS can help with planning recreational activities or assist in emergency planning but in advance of these scenarios having a plan to ensure family members know where to meet, how to communicate, and what to do are vital in ensuring safety in any situation.

In addition to having an emergency plan, families and individuals should always keep emergency supplies on hand. With supplies, planning, and access to NWS broadcasts families can be prepared to face any potential hardships or hazards summertime fun might bring.

Delicious Banana Nut Bread Bars from Quaker Oats

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Quaker Oats for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

I am always on the go or eating in front of my computer on conference calls and sometimes I have a hard time finding even 5 minutes to start a microwave lunch.  In these instances I rely on snack or meal replacement bars and one of my favorite is the Quaker Soft Baked Bar which not only tastes great but provides fiber, protein, B-vitamins and is only 140 calories per serving.

QSBB Yum Image high res.jpg

The Cinnamon Pecan Bread is delicious as well and would work just fine as a breakfast snack if you don't have time to cook a full mean or are on the go.  However the real winner of the taste contest for me is the Banana Nut Bread bars, these are delicious either hot or cold and they are just much better than your typical breakfast or meal replacement bar.

QSBB 3D Carton Banana.jpg (2 documents, 2 total pages)

You don't even have to take the bars out of the packaging to warm them up, you simply pop the package in the microwave for 9-12 seconds and the Quaker Soft Baked Bar softens up even more and literally melts in your mouth as you start to eat it.  Eat it with a glass of milk or almond milk and it tastes even better!

I can't drink dairy, so I enjoy them with a small glass of Almond milk myself, but my kids like having 2% milk when they get these bars.  Ironically my son's favorite breakfast bars are the Quaker oatmeal cookies with chocolate chip which is another Quaker product.

Either way, instead of eating some breakfast fast food you can have something that actually qualifies as a wholesome food when you enjoy a Quaker Soft Baked Bar as a snack or a meal replacement.

Have you had a chance to try them yet?  Which flavor is your preference?

Meatball Subs at 2Good2B

My wife and I have been meaning to try the gluten free meatball subs at 2Good2B bakery the next time were were in Encinitas, CA and they did not disappoint.

GF Meatball sub The gluten free bread is simply amazing and tastes great, the meatballs are incredible and my only wish was that the slathered more sauce on the bread under the meatballs instead of the small amount of sauce on top of the meatballs.  The bread is fairly thick so you need a little extra sauce in my opinion.

I also wish they offered foot long sizes, I could have had a larger portion (but maybe that is indulgence or gluttony?)

If you are on a Gluten Free diet, you won’t find much better than 2Good2B which has gluten free cakes, muffins, cookies, cupcakes, pies (including Chicken pot pies).  They not only don’t use wheat, but there is no soy or corn in any of their products either and they all taste so good.

Everything I have had to eat there (Quiches, French Toast, Cookies, Carrot Cake Cupcakes, Subs…etc) I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Back to Work and Testing Magic Jack Plus

Today I am back to work and will be testing the Magic Jack Plus for the first time, I had been using the Magic Jack for over 3 years but it required being plugged into the USB port of my computer. This time I am testing the Magic Jack plus which can plug directly into the wall, your phone and router via cat 5 cable bypassing the need for a PC at all. This should in theory cause less jitter if you use your computer or you don’t have a lot of RAM or CPU power and multitasking could cause issues with the service. I wasn’t having any problems, but I needed to make my Magic Jack more portable for when I travel and I can’t bring my home PC with me.

Hence I will be operating using the Magic Jack plus this week for all my calls and will let my readers know if it is as stable as the regular Magic Jack which I use every day about 5-6 hours per day for 3 years straight. I use it with a standard phone and a cordless over the ear headset that supports a standard phone.

I have used it with my Logitech wireless headset before but the microphone isn’t as good and the audio sounds a little tinny compared to the standard phone and headset I was using so I only use that as a backup. Wish me luck in my Magic Jack Plus testing.
