Gluten Joins the Family

Last night we picked up Gluten after 7 weeks of waiting and started the process of integrating him with the family.  He is a 7 week old Boston Terrier male puppy and is just the sweetest thing.  The kids were so looking forward to him coming home and we had dinner at PF Chang’s last night, picked him up and head straight home.

We took him to the yard right away so he knew where to do his business, then slowly introduced him to our two other Boston Terriers.  We have a doggie door so hopefully potty training him wont’ be too hard as he learns to follow the other dogs out and back in.

Gluten has an unusual coloration for a Boston Terrier in having almost one complete black and one complete white paw.  His left front paw is all black except for white on the tip, this technically is not breed standard but part of the thing that makes him so unique and attracted us to him as a puppy.

Say hello to Gluten, there will be a ton of pictures of him coming up in future posts.

Depositphotos Free Trial Subscription for Bloggers

I did participate in the free trial subscription of Depositphotos for bloggers earlier this year and have to tell other bloggers that it is completely worth it and you should sign up immediately here: http://Depositphotos.com/for-bloggers.html

The main reason is that you get a set duration subscription where you can download 5 images per day (royalty free) and keep those images, if your blog is popular you could get a 30 day subscription (or longer) and get 150 images for free that you can keep and use as often as you want.

These images come in 5 different sizes including vector as well and you can greatly increase your media library by adding generic images to represent the categories, niche topics you cover most frequently.

image

Depositphotos has millions, literally almost 7.5 million images you can choose from and their images span every possible category you could think of including:

Their pricing is very reasonable and honestly I was so impressed I am becoming a paid subscription customer when my free trial expires.  The cost per image when getting a subscription plan is more competitive and better than virtually any other stock photography site on the web.

I also like browsing the newest uploads so you can grab fresh original images that likely haven’t been used on other sites before and recycled many times.  This is a great way to also come up with new blog post idea’s around an image and I leverage this for my poetry blog as well (nothing like creating a poem around an image).

image

If you use stock image photography for your websites right now or you leverage free image libraries then I encourage you to check out and give the Depositphotos free trial subscription a go.  You wont’ be disappointed and you will be amazed by the quality and sheer amount of images and sizes available.  With these images I was able to make a new Facebook Header for my DragonBlogger Technology Fanpage too!

Starting a Conversation with a Blog Post

One of the commenters on my guest blog post about blog commenting left a statement that stuck with me.  They ended their comment stating "Posting an article should be the beginning of a conversation not an end." I couldn’t agree more that this is what separates a blog from a news site and bloggers from editorial writers and journalists.

As bloggers you aren’t just supposed to report about information, you are supposed to engage your readers and share opinions and bring in conversations.  There are different goals in mind on why you would want to accomplish this but one of the most clear benefits is simply encouraging comments and building a relationship with your readers that leaves a lasting impression.  If a reader "knows you" as a person who is the author of information instead of just knows the article they have read.  They are more inclined to come back, engage and follow that author for future articles.

cute robot cyborg

One thing you see lacking with most offered guest posts is "engagement" and "opinions" too often you will see rewritten content that will be Copyscape free but will also offer little to the reader that will provide a lasting impression.  Most guest posters have no vested interest in your readers or audience and so therefore will not have personality injected into the blog posts you are given.  Personality is important for any article on a blog that you own or administrate, anyone can present the statistics and information but doing so in a way that entertains or contrasts is what gets remembered.

Always approach articles with your own personality, opinions, style when presenting information and always open your blog post up to conversation by inviting conversation, challenges, support, opinions or even bring up a controversial or emotional topic from time to time and get people riled up and incited to leave feedback or opinions on your article.

Remember, conversations are the lifeblood of blogs and you want to make sure you are promoting conversations, if you aren’t then you mine as well just disable commenting on your blogs.

5 Tips for Looking after your New Puppy

Getting a new puppy can be a life changing decision. Adding an additional member to your family takes time, care and a lot of responsibility. Once you have decided to get a new puppy, there are some things you should know, to make the transition of looking after your new puppy run a lot more smoothly. Below is a guide aimed at helping new puppy owners through this exciting journey!

Dog Obedience Training

Dog Obedience Training is a great way ensure that you build a strong and respectful relationship with your new puppy, and you never know, one day the skills your dog learns may save his or her life. Dog Obedience Training commences with basic training, including Sit, Stay, Down and Come. The skills that both you and your puppy learn in basic dog obedience training will make it easier when teaching your dog right from wrong around the house. If you wish to train your puppy further, there are always more advanced options of dog obedience training available, including the teaching of skills such as High Five, Roll Over and Jump Hoops.

Exercise and Socializing

From a young age, it is important that your dog interacts with other dogs in a safe and controlled environment. The socialization skills that your dog learns as a puppy will carry through to their adult lives. Socializing should also occur with other people to nurture a healthy and well-behaved personality. Most new puppy’s will only need a maximum of 20 minutes of play and exercise each day, as their bones are not yet fully developed. Try easy play with your puppy, such as fetch or hide and seek if you have a garden.

House Training Your Puppy

House Training your puppy from an early age is a great way to ensure that messy accidents don’t keep reoccurring. In the first few weeks after you bring your puppy home, it is important to bond with him or her, before beginning toilet training. Toilet training can be a time consuming process and often requires a great deal of patience. If your new puppy relieves themselves in the wrong place, be sure to clean this immediately to remove all scent and prevent them from next time wanting to use the same space again. Choose a spot for your new puppy’s toilet area and take them there every morning and after meals. When your puppy goes to the toilet in the correct area be sure to reward them and use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior.

Keeping Track of Vaccines and Immunizations

Before you collect your new puppy they should have received all of their vaccines and immunizations. As your puppy begins to grow, just like humans, they will require new vaccines and immunizations. Be sure to talk with your VET and keep a record of when your pet is due for their next visit. If you have trouble remembering dates, make sure you log these important times into a dairy, or download one of the many Apps designed to help you keep track of your pet’s health.

Tips for the Transition to their New Home

Although this is a very exciting time, it can also be a scary for time for new puppy’s as this will most likely be there first time away from their mother. Providing comforts such as a warm bed and a hot water bottle can provide puppies with a sense of security, easing the effects of the transition away from their mother. These comforts should help your new puppy to relax in their new home.

Best Gluten Free Whenever Bars

Recently I have been tasting a lot more Gluten free products and one thing that I had trouble finding was a gluten free breakfast cereal or snack bar that tasted any good.  They typically are dry and absorb all moisture in your mouth, hard as bricks and you feel like you are choking down field rations rather than trying to enjoy a quick on the go meal replacement.

Fortunately I came across Pamelas Whenever Bars the other week and I enjoyed them so much I went through a whole box in 3 days.

IMG_0099

These are incredible tasting and so moist and juicy you can’t believe it.  The flavor is a little like oatmeal cranberry marzipan you really taste the almond flavor in with the cranberry and this is a great choice for those who are sick of the chocolate, peanut butter, strawberry flavored cereal bars that get old fast.

These bars are also dairy free, wheat-free in addition to being gluten free so they are an excellent choice to replace a breakfast or lunch if you are in a hurry.

I eat oatmeal and cereal bars often and all types (Nutigrain, Quaker…etc) I can honestly tell you that the Pamelas Whenever Bars were the best flavored bars I have tasted in a long time.  The fact that they were gluten/wheat/dairy free and taste this good was a huge plus.

If you are on a wheat or gluten free diet and need some meal bars on the go, you can’t go wrong with a box of these.

What Kind of Bed Do You Need for Large Dogs?

Fortunately I have smaller dogs and finding dog beds isn’t such a difficult thing when you have dogs the size of a cat.  However when we used to have an Old English Mastiff / Rottweiler mix named Bear we had a heck of a time finding something for him to sleep on.

Gouda and Bear Sunning

Bear preferred sleeping on dirt, even though he had a dog bed!

The thing is when looking for dog beds for large dogs you also have to consider where you will put the bed, the bed measured the size of a loveseat in length and width so we had to make sure that there was enough room in the bedroom or living room to accommodate such a large dog bed.

Also a large dog bed can get dirtier and wear out faster due to the size of the dog so it’s important to choose one made from quality materials and that is durable.  They make some where you can unzip and throw the cover into the washer to keep it fresh longer in some cases as well.

A dog bed is something any dog large or small can consider a safe place, provide warmth and ease joint and leg pain (especially in older dogs) so they don’t have to rest and lay on a hard surface.  Everyone should consider a dog bed (unless you let the dog sleep in your bed).

About Your Amazing Body

Your body is amazing. Not yours personally (well it might be…), but the body in general. While you will likely take your body for granted, occasionally working it hard in the gym to make sure that it looks its best and does what it’s supposed to do, for the most part you will likely just kind of ‘assume’ it’s going to work and not give too much thought as to how it all happens and just how incredible it actually all is.

Well here we shall put that to rest and spend some time really looking at the incredible-ness of the human body and what makes it such a marvellous piece of engineering.

Where Do You Come From?

Maybe you think you know where you come from, and maybe you can trace yourself back a few generations. However at the end of the day where you really come from ‘originally’ is much more impressive and shocking.

Your body is made up of protein, and this protein is made up of amino acids which in turn are carbon compounds. In short then you are made up of the substance carbon, which is the same element found in our air (global warming) and in diamonds.

When you eat protein our body basically takes the amino acids from that source and then uses them in order to reconstruct your body. In other words then you literally are what you eat. So when you eat a piece of Beef, you are using the parts of that cow to make your own tissue. That means that particles inside of you have been parts of cows, and have been parts of pigs, chickens and more. At the same time though those particles were something else before they were parts of cows, meaning that you can trace some of the carbon inside you back through the entire circle of life. In short, there are parts of you that were probably once dinosaurs – which really is incredible when you think about it.

How Deep Does the Rabbit Hole Go?

Things get weird than that though too. Because before your atoms belonged to dinosaurs, and the plankton that lived on Earth before dinosaurs had even evolved, you need to think about where it was before that point.

No one knows the answer to that question definitively, but we can say with almost certainty that if you were to trace back your carbon compounds far enough, you could go all the way into space and into the heart of a dying star.

In order to form carbon, which has an atomic value of 6, you need incredible amounts of heat and pressure – which can’t be found anywhere on Earth. In fact the center of our own sun doesn’t have enough energy to create carbon and neither do other stars in the universe. The only place where this kind of energy exists is in the hearts of dying stars called red dwarfs, and this means that all of the material that makes up your body was forged in the heart of a dying star. Starting to feel a bit like Superman yet?

From there your carbon molecules then travelled through space, most likely on an asteroid or meteorite and will have crashed down on Earth. But who knows, before that it could have crashed down on any other planet – it may be that you are partly formed of deceased aliens.

And as though all this wasn’t strange enough, it’s also true that every single atom in your body will be replaced every 10 years. In other words, not one part of you is the same as it was ten years ago, and so by most definitions you are not you.

Be good to your body, because in short: it’s a miracle.

Buying Cartridges for Your Printer

Buying a printer is inevitable for most offices as well as homes. When one buys a printer, it comes as package with the printing ink. This is what takes people not know the actual price of the ink since they did not buy it independently. Most people who have printers that use hp 56 ink get shocked once they need to replace and learn of the price. In some cases, you will find it almost as the cost of the printer and this can be quite frustrating. This is what makes most people resort to seeking cheaper alternatives so as to ensure that they printing activities are not brought to a halt. Unfortunately, most people have regretted the cheaper options and have had to spend so much money later on.

printer icon dark red, isolated on white background

First and foremost, the quality of the printed documents is very poor ands at times it will have spills of the ink. Just like the saying goes that cheap is expensive, the cheap ink might even cost you profits since people will associate your printed work with lack of professionalism and low standards. The manufactures of the printing ink are very strategic in their marketing campaigns. You will notice that most of them have also ventured into the production of printers. The printers are normally sold at very low prices so as to attract as many consumers as possible. They understand that as soon as you get the printer, you will definitely require printing ink and this is where they maximize their profits. When you need to replace the cartridge like the hp 940xl, you will be forced to part with quite some money.

Most manufactures claim that the high price pegged on the cartridges is as result of the high quality. However, you should not be quick to dismiss the cheaper options since they might be as equally good. But over and above, it is better to settle for the genuine ink cartridges.

Are Adult Playgrounds Viable?

In a recent article on BBC News about the rise of the adult playground I started thinking about this being a good idea for playgrounds all across the United States as well.

The idea behind an adult playground is that exercise equipment is built or installed in adjoining area’s next to kid’s playgrounds at parks and playgrounds.  This way parents, babysitters…etc have the option to use the exercise equipment while they watch and oversee the kids at the playground.

Studies have shown that people tend to work out when equipment is available and gym memberships are not always affordable for much of the population.

Even as I was thinking how good idea this was I started thinking about the challenges of implementing adult exercise equipment into existing playground area’s, these came around cost involved for the city or corporations that have those areas as well as how to maintain the equipment and prevent vandalism.  Vandalism being the key detriment as it is easy to sabotage and cause expensive damage to certain exercise equipment so we would want to find ways to deter such from occurring.

Still, I think it’s worth pursuing and giving as an option.  I know I take my kids to the playground fairly often, and I see tons of kids at playgrounds when I visit them in CA and AZ, the parents or babysitters just sitting on benches, maybe this is the extra option to help a portion of the population get a little more exercise?

Gaming in Our Household Improves

We gave our 8 year old son his birthday/graduation present early and it was a brand new budget gaming laptop.  This impressive Lenovo Z575 was packed to the gills with an AMD A6 processor, 6GB of RAM, 500GB Hard Drive and an AMD Radeon HD 6650M graphics card all for $499 which was too good an offer to pass up.

Now I refurbished the old laptop for my 5 year old, rebranded it and now he has his own laptop for the first time and voila.

2laptops

I have 2 boys with fully functional laptops they can call their own, now I spent much of the weekend gaming in Wizard 101 with both of my boys, I bought the family plan and the 3 of us had fun for hours.

To further help with the branding of my kids laptops, I picked up some awesome laptop skins (both were $9.99) and Starcraft 2 one is for my older son who adores the game.

My younger son picked out Spiderman 3 logo as his laptop skin.

They are happy campers and now if only I could get my wife to upgrade her laptop so she can join us in Wizard 101 and make it a full family affair instead of 3 out of 4 family members playing it.
