Porky Can Chew

porky-1
This nine month old Boston Terrier with a short flat snout has some bad habits that don’t make me love him any less, even if they are a little costly some of them.

First, he passes tons of gas, we were watching Animal Planet and learned that Boston Terriers are the gasiest dog breeds on the planet. This is because they have short nasal passages and swallow alot of air. So make sure you have tons of air freshener around these guys.

Second, he is a bad chewer and our outdoor furniture is virtually destroyed. We had a swing in the yard that he chewed through the seat and cotton stuffing was found all over our yard. He also decimated some lawn chairs, my drip lines for watering my plants and some other things.

He has been a little better lately (not much left to destroy), but most of his bad behaviors in the yard are probably boredom. We don’t leave the dogs outside for long anymore (its now 105 degree’s outside, so they are only outside for 15 – 30 minutes at most at a time), but when he is outside he gets bored and chews.

He never chews on stuff inside the house, and he hasn’t had a potty accident in weeks, but overall the dog cost me about $200 in furniture damage in the yard from his little chewing habits. The funny thing is we gave him some of our kids old stuffed animals and bought some dog chew toys and he ignores all that stuff, only prefering tables, chairs and wicker swings apparently.

Celebrating Dog’s Birthday Today

I mentioned in a previous post we were having an “Over the Hill” party for our 8 year old Boston Terrier who turns 8 on Monday, but we decided to celebrate today.  Breaking out some balloons, Frosty Paws, Pigs Ears, and some cupcakes for the kids and adults we will be walking over the playground and having the party tonight for the dog.  Gouda has been a great family member and deserves some special recognition on this day, so Happy Birthday Gouda Emmenthaler Germino the Boston Terrier who is larger than life.

Taking Mercedes Benz In for Repair

Having been rear ended a few months ago at a stop light, we are finally going to open a claim to get our Mercedes Benz taken into the body shop to have the rear bumper replaced and repaired. The repairs on these parts aren’t pretty but at least I don’t have to buy replacement Ferrari parts which I am sure would have cost much more.

I am going to wait until after my Cabo vacation to open the claim, so I won’t have to leave a rental car with my Mother in Law while she babysits the kids while my wife and I are in Cabo soaking up the sun and fishing for Mahi Mahi.

June 1st is growing closer and my vacation is right around the corner.

Going To See Star Trek

I can’t help it, I have been a big fan of Star Trek since I was ten years old and my father had us sit down and watch the original Star Trek: The Next Generation. I was hooked on Captain Picard and the rest of the cast, and since then I have gone back and watched every episode of the original classic Star Trek, most of Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and some of Star Trek Enterprise. I have seen all of the films and Star Trek II – The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV – The Voyage Home and Star Trek: First Contact are my favorite three films so far.

The new Star Trek movie just looks exciting and I hope it breathes fresh life into the Star Trek series, just like George Lucas did with Star Wars with the prequels, Star Trek needs to invite in a younger audience and regain foothold as one of the best Sci-Fi genres out there. What I always liked about Star Trek was the scientific exploration approach that Star Fleet took on space and exploring the Galaxy.

Here was a future where all of mankind was no longer working just for money, money had become obsolete and people only did jobs that they wanted to do. With food being free thanks to replicators and such, everyone had the ability to do exactly what they wanted. The people who joined Starfleet wanted to become explorers, scientists and see what was “out there” in the universe. It is funny that decades after Star Trek some of the theoretical technologies in the show like Anti-matter are now proven to actually exist.

I am trying not to have high expectations of the new film, but I can’t help it. The entire genre is dependent on this film being a success, and I would like to see it become more prominent again.

I Once Lived Near A Crazy Neighbor

Back when I lived in Mesa when my wife and I bought our first starter home we unknowingly moved next door to what can only be described as a mentally unstable person.  This person befriended us on moving day and was nice at first, quickly becoming bothering and then downright evil.  This person would harass our family for everything they could from trimming branches to fabricating stories, and it got so bad we had to take a restraining order out on this person.

The person only retaliated with a restraining order of their own and got it through a different court, we tried to fight it but lost as this person was a friend of the judge.  The neighbor proceeded to contact city council and complain our structure was not up to code and we had to deal with those issues.

I actually had to install my own wireless security system where I setup some wireless video camera’s monitoring my driveway and entrance just to video tape and see what was being done in front of my house. I caught them parking in front of my garbage can deliberately to block garbage pickup, then drive off after the pickup was missed in addition to them defacing the front of my property.

In the end we decided to sell our first starter home and move away, we barely broke even selling the house and we were lucky because this was before the housing market collapsed.  We sold a home and made nothing off of it just so we could get away from this person.

The lesson here is to try and learn something about your neighbors before you move into a community and purchase a home, take a moment to greet some neighbors and ask some questions about the neighborhood, don’t get trapped like we did.

Getting Back Into Wii Fit Routine

I had let my Wii Fit routine slip over the past months and have decided to recommit to doing 20 minutes of Wii Fit every morning at 6 – 6:30am before I start working and my son goes to school.  I was not happy when I saw that my weight had increased over the past few months and have to work harder to make sure I keep at this routine.  It is a constant battle to find the time and energy to work out but in the end it is always worth it.  It is kind of ironic I had been benching consistently and doing heavy lifting every other day, but the aerobics from Wii Fit are still needed for extra calorie burn.

Taking Family Out For Mother’s Day

I will be taking my family out to a new steak house on Sunday night at the Pink Pony in Scottsdale, My wife, Mother in Law, Father in Law, two kids and myself enjoy taking the family out for special occasions to celebrate together. Sure it might not be as fancy and exciting as giving the gift of diamond rings but it is at least something we all can partake in as a family.

Mother’s day is a celebration not only of ones own Mother, but anyone who is a Mother. Especially if your wife or partner bore your children, she deserves to be appreciated for such a grand expression of affection. I hope everyone out there celebrates the mothers in their life on Sunday.

Our Dogs Over The Hill Party

My family is throwing our soon to be eight year old male Boston Terrier an Over the Hill party this weekend, Gouda the dog turns eight years old on Monday May 11th and we didn’t know if he would survive to his eight birthday with having a spinal stroke late last year and being paralyzed for three weeks in his right rear leg.

The family is treating him to some “Frosty Paws” doggie ice cream, some blown up balloons which he loves to chase, some dog treats (Pig’s ears and rope toys are his favorite) and just a general celebration of his wonderful contribution to our family.

Gouda has been with the family through three moves and has seen the birth of both children and is just about the best pet a family can have. He sleeps in bed with us every night with his younger Boston Terrier buddy, and they are more like our children than pets.

So do you think we are crazy, or just really love our pets? What are some funny things you have done for your pet cat, dog, bird or lizard to celebrate them being part of your family?

I want to hear from you, so leave a comment.

Update:

Bumble Blog talks about how much she loves her cat and how she cuddles with her cat for hours.

Excessive Violence In Media

First I would like to declare that I am against censorship completely and believe that artists (directors) who create films, TV shows and the like should have the ability to express their art however they see fit. That being said I am for ratings of films if they mean something, but the problem is film ratings mean less and less these days.

There used to be a standard expectation between G, PG, PG-13 and R Rated films and the lines between PG-13 and R have become so blurred that it feels like the movies are either PG or R without any PG-13 in the middle. Too often movies that target younger teenage audiences have content that is more suited for adults in an effort to pander to both types of audiences and maximize on returns at the box office.

You can’t really fault the artist an R rating is almost a death sentence to movies looking for a teenage audience just as much as an NC-17 rating is pretty much the death rating of a film entirely at the box office. Yet we find our society in a situation where violence is seen as much more acceptable and normal in a film, yet love and romance is often elevated to a higher rating status.

Films in general have gotten much more graphic in the last fifteen or so years with rarely seeing actual throats getting slit, or body parts flying off. Previously you were seen the action just prior, and the end result (toned down) rather than the act itself with such realism you mine as well show it actually happening.

Personally I don’t mind for myself and never really cared about content in films, but your whole aspect on films and television shows changes when you have children (or it should change, if it doesn’t I am concerned). Children want to watch what other kids watch, yet most movies and TV shows about Superheroes and such are way above a little kids appropriate age, and yet most comic books which they read or cartoons of the same heroes are within their range so they feel left out.

I often wondered if they should make two different versions of a film, like a PG cut version of every R rated film and release it at the theater simultaneously. For example they edit the films to make them PG rated to fit on Television broadcasts, why not release a younger kid friendly version of Xmen Origins: Wolverine at the same time to capitalize on the younger audience at the same time as the adult audience. Heck you may even get people who want to see both versions of the film if you release some different content in each version that may alter the experience slightly.

Either way the ratings systems are not accurate enough and too many PG-13 films should probably get an R rating, they are slipping much more violence, language and nudity into PG-13 films than they did five or ten years ago it seems. The lines are blurring and it makes it harder as a parent to decide what your child can or cannot watch without screening it yourself.

Everyone Should Play An Instrument

My family is a firm believer that everyone should have at least some musical instruction and learning in their lifetime, as children it is proven that learning to play music helps academically as well as socially. My father was a drummer and I grew up with a full 7 piece drum set in my house, but for some reason I never had aptitude to play the drums.

I did however want to learn how to play the keyboard or take piano lessons when I was a child, I had naturally dexterous fingers and was a very quick typer I figured I would have some ability at playing the piano. Alas though for one reason or another it never panned out and other than learning to play the Recorder, and Xylophone in school, I don’t really know how to play a musical instrument which is one of my regrets.

Eventually I would like to find the time to learn how to play the Guitar, or piano but for now my schedule is not capable of fitting this in. Our son however who is five years old is in drum lessons, he chose what instrument he wanted to learn and he has an aptitude for it. Already being able to read drum notes he is getting better every week and it is a good thing.
