Environmental New Year’s Resolutions for 2014

Every year we make the same old resolutions. As the clock chimes on January 1st the booming sound of a billion empty promises will echo across the earth, “I’m going to work harder”, “I’m going to work less”, “I’m going to drink less”, I’m going to drink more”, ok maybe not the last one but even so the point remains that many of these resolutions (in fact the majority of them) will be broken by the end of the month and are (let’s be honest here) of very little consequence anyway.

There are resolutions you can make however that will not only require very little effort but will go a small way towards saving our planet. This may sound a little far fetched by the figures speak louder than words ever could. A recent IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report has found that if our attitudes to our environment don’t change soon we could be looking at catastrophic results in our life times with sea levels expected to rise by between 0.28m and 0.98 metres in the next 80 years.

Though the impetus for change is largely on the shoulders of global conglomerates and governments, if we all pitch in and start living more environmentally friendly existences in 2014 it will make a huge difference. Below, we’ll take you through just a few potential resolutions relating to how you can live a more environmentally conscious life over the next year and beyond that.

Next year I’ll recycle more

Until recently, recycling was seen as a bit of a farce but as the years wore on and the landfills continued to swell it became much less of a joke. Now it’s far more convenient to recycle and there is absolutely no stigma attached to it so in the majority of cases there is no reason why you shouldn’t recycle if the option is available to you. Many homes in the UK are now even issued with recycling bins that are collected bi-weekly along with their regular bins but if you live in the city it’s still easier than it ever has been to recycle. Even local garbage tips will have as many recycling options available as they do options for disposal so making the resolution to recycle more is probably the most logical and simple.

Next year I’ll drive less

As a species we have become incredibly lazy, to the extent that many of us will think nothing of climbing in our cars to drive to the corner shop and pick up a carton of milk. Simply making the pledge to walk or cycle wherever possible will make a huge difference to your carbon footprint, maybe not daily or even weekly but certainly over a year.

Next year I’ll use less electricity and water

Electricity and water are two things we tend to take for granted and as such we are all guilty of perhaps using more than our fair share. It takes very little effort to make a big difference though by simply remaining vigilant. Electricity especially is a commodity we’re using more of now than ever before due to a perpetual increase in technology. For example always make sure lights are turned off when you leave a room, turn off power sockets when they’re not in use and make the switch to energy efficient light bulbs. Also with your computers, tablets and smartphone devices, if they are in standby mode and being charged, unplug them as they will still be drawing power. This will not only benefit the environment, but your wallet too. Also try running more showers and less baths, only washing full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine and turning off the tap whilst you’re brushing your teeth. These are all ‘habit’ that you’ll need to almost trick yourself into adapting but once you have adapted, you’ll find it difficult to fall back into your old, wasteful ways.

Next year I’ll join an environmental organisation

If you’re really committed then you may want to consider signing up for membership with one of the countries many environmental groups. Of course this requires a little more commitment than simply remembering to turn the lights in the kitchen off when you’ve finished dinner, but the rewards can be more than worthwhile.

These are merely suggestions (feel free to add your own ideas to the list as it is by no means extensive) but as you can no doubt see, the majority of these resolutions require very minor lifestyle changes. Sometimes a little can go a long though.

So this year when you’re thinking through your potential resolutions for 2014, don’t waste your effort on some misguided vanity project. After all, what’s more important, looking a little better in your bikini this Summer or helping make our planet a more sustainable place for our children and our children’s children to live, work and thrive?

5 Great Brain Games For Dogs

Humans are constantly doing crossword puzzles, word games or even Sudoku to keep their mind fresh and functioning properly. It’s been found that playing games like these can help people focus better and combat memory loss, as well as improve their overall IQ.

Like humans, dogs can play brain games to help improve their mentality. Some games are better than others, and the following are some of the best games you can purchase to help your dog improve their brain.

1. Kyjen Dog Games Puzzle Paw Flapper

The Kyjen Dog Games Puzzle Paw Flapper is a great choice for your dog because it’s two puzzles in one. By putting treats inside and allowing your dog to earn the treats as a reward, you will easily have your dog hooked on trying to win this game. Not only does your dog have to try and figure out how to open each cartridge to get a treat, but they also have to figure out how to spin the toy to earn even more treats. This game will certainly entertain your dog for hours and help improve their mind.

2. Nina Ottosson’s Interactive Dog Toy

Nina Ottosson’s Interactive Dog Toy works similarly to the Puzzle Paw Flapper in that your dog has two different puzzles to figure out before earning their treats. Your dog will need to learn how to open and slide the “dog brick” in order to earn the tasty rewards you put inside, and it will keep them occupied for hours on end.

3. Seek a Treat Shuffle Bone Dog Puzzle

Place treats inside the hidden compartments of the Seek a Treat Shuffle Bone Dog Puzzle and see how long it takes your canine companion to figure out how to move the sliders to access the treats. This puzzle doesn’t have two different choices like the others on this list, but it still challenges your dog’s IQ.

4. Hagen Dogit Mind Games 3-in-1 Interactive Smart Toy for Dogs

If you have a medium or small dog, the Hagen Dogit Mind Games 3-in-1 Interactive Smart Toy for Dogs is a great toy for you. This toy has suction cups on the bottom to keep the toy in the same position so that your dog isn’t moving it throughout the house. These games include hide and seek, spin a whirl and a sliding puzzle. This game will easily keep your dog entertained for hours while also eliminating hyperactivity.

5. Planet Dog Mazee

The Planet Dog Mazee comes in a variety of different colors and is a great way to provide your dog with tasty treats and a mind puzzling game. Throughout playing with this ball, your dog will start to unlock pieces of the puzzle that will reward them with treats. The smarter your dog is, the more treats he or she will earn. This game will easily keep your dog busy and smarten them up. Plus, this product is completely safe and durable, and it was made in the USA.

As an added benefit, many games that are played with dogs can also double as training tools. Dogs love the attention and spending quality time with their master – so why not incorporate a new command or trick here and there to make things more interesting for your pooch?

3 Typing Tests To See How Fast You Type

There are easily dozens of typing tests available on the Internet, as any quick Google search can show you. The question is which ones are reliable. If you’re looking to test to see how fast you type, below are the three best typing tests that we have found, though personal experience. Try them out and see if you agree.

10fastfingers

10 Fast Fingers. (www.10fastfingers.com)

10 Fast Fingers is one of many websites that offers both typing tests and lessons to help improve typing speed and accuracy. What makes it different is that instead of presenting you with a section of text from a fable or well known story, the test on 10 Fast Fingers is a string of random words. This may actually offer the most accurate test of your typing speed, as it does not include punctuation, and only the most basic of capitalization. It is, in essence, a test of letters only.

Once complete, the test gives you a breakdown of correct and incorrect words and keystrokes. This website is also handy if you run a blog or a website, as once you’ve completed your test, it gives you an embeddable HTML code with your score and a challenge for all takers to try and beat your score. If you’re looking for more of an active challenge though, check out the next entry on our list.

TypeRacer. (www.typeracer.com)

TypeRacer is one of the most popular typing programs on the Internet. It pits typists against others with comparable speed and skill in what breaks down into a series of typing tests. Each test starts with between 2 and 4 racers, racing each other and the clock to be the fastest to type a quote or turn of phrase. Most of these are taken from pop culture, with the source listed below the quote. After each race, you are given a breakdown of that race’s typing speed and accuracy. Though you can play as a guest, creating an account gives you the option of keeping track of your average score and all of your previous races.

A dedicated racer can race through movie quotes and book passages as fast as their fingers can carry them. In addition to all the fun and games, they offer typing lessons for beginners to get you up to fighting speed. TypeRacer also offers programs for teachers to use that gives their students the same fun typing lessons as they would get on the website, but enables them to create a private room for their student’s use. While it appeals to the student’s sense of competition, it can also be used to teach other subjects, as the texts that are typed can be selected and specified by the teacher.

Ratatype (www.ratatype.com)

From its blue-clad spandex superhero to its user friendly interface, Ratatype is one of the easiest and most accurate typing tests to use on the Internet. All of its lessons and tests are available for free, and this website also has the added bonus of offering printable certificates that attest to your typing speed and accuracy. Because saying you type 80 words per minute is nice, but having a lovely certificate to show a potential employer is nicer.

There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles on Ratatype, and that’s part of its charm. There are no overblown lessons, no page after page of typing games or things to distract you. It makes the website very easy to navigate, even for the newest computer user. There are four simple options. Typing Tutor, Typing Test, Learn, and High Scores. Easy, right? No doubt as to where you would need to go to find what you’re looking for.

The advent of the Internet made learning to type a necessity, and there are many jobs now that cannot be done without at least a basic knowledge of touch typing. These three websites have quickly come to the forefront when it comes to learning how to type properly. It is a skill that no one can afford to live without, so what’s stopping you from taking that first step?

Kindle Fire HDX Connection Problem to Linksys RE1000 Wireless Extender

I wish I could go into this post saying that I found a solution to this problem, but only that I can reproduce the issue on a Kindle Fire HDX that others have reproduced on Kindle Fire HD.

http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle/ref=cm_cd_fp_ef_tft_tp?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&cdThread=Tx2Z1X8QD269E5Y

This is the Amazon thread I found where a few users reported problems getting various Kindle Fire devices to work with Wireless Range Extenders.  One such product mentioned is the Linksys RE1000 which is the exact same Wireless extender I recently purchased as well.

The problem is that the Kindle Fire HDX and other Kindle Fire devices are not able to establish and maintain a connection to the Wireless Range Extender and instead keep repeatedly dropping the connection or won’t connect at all.  In looking at what seems to be happening, rather than automatically picking up the nearest and strongest signal it looks like the Kindle keeps trying to bounce between the main router and the wireless range extender constantly which causes it to keep it’s cycle of constantly dropping and trying to reconnect.

Some people mentioned you have to use a Dual Band Wireless Extender for the Kindle Fire HDX and HD to work with a range extender, I could have tried the Linksys RE2000 which is Dual Band, but didn’t want to spend the money yet until I can be assured it would work especially when the Linksys RE2000 has a ton of terrible reviews on Amazon and only an average 2 star rating.

I see the ASUS EA-N66 seems to be a really good Wireless Extender but needs some configuration so I may purchase one of these to extend the Wi-Fi in the home at some point to replace the RE1000, I haven’t seen anything about Kindle Fire HDX or other Kindle Fire issues connecting to these.

How to Contact Companies to Request Product Reviews

I did a guest article on Basic Blog Tips where I presented ideas on how to contact companies to request products to review and share with your readers, this helps build relationships with brands and partnerships and can improve your reputation as an online blogger and personality as well as raise awareness for your willingness to partner with brands.  This is an especially good thing if you are a blogger who wants to partner with brands and be able to forge relationships with companies in the hopes of monetizing your online personality and blog.

I encourage you to stop by and read the article and share your thoughts: http://basicblogtips.com/better-product-reviews.html

I am considering making it a series and will focus on how to write effective product reviews as subsequent articles covering various types of potential reviews including services, products, software and games.  As you have to review different products separately but all get approached in the same style as far as I am concerned.

I even gave a sample initial contact letter you can use and email to companies and advertisers as a potential means of introducing yourself.

Happy 2014 Everyone

May your 2014 be more prosperous than 2013!

The years start to blur with repetition it seems and I can’t even fathom that my kids are 7 and 10 now.  My goal for 2014 is to not let the year go by so fast, and to make some progress on my goals.  I will start the New Year by trying to sleep in for a change and not get up before 7:30am but that is a long shot for sure.

With any luck my dogs will get some play time at the dog beach today and be able to frolic in the sand and ocean for the first time which should be fun, I will try to record some of it on my iPhone for Vine or YouTube if Gluten does some funny stuff.

Once again, Happy New Year and what are some of your goals and/or resolutions for 2014?

  • Live life to the fullest
  • More Love / Less Hate

Are just a few goals.

Ordered More RAM

With some Amazon credit I decided my Dell XPS 18 needed more RAM after the 4GB it came with just was not up to the snuff with the amount of applications I need to have open to be efficient.  I love the 18” screen and the portability of the tablet, it was so nice being able to simply scroll websites with the touch of the screen and to use it as a Netflix movie screen at night.

The new RAM came from Kingston Digital and should arrive sometime right before New Years, honestly if you have 4GB of RAM for your Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC, upgrading to 8GB of RAM can make a huge difference in the sluggishness of open applications and task switching.

Meanwhile, I still have a bunch of product reviews to catch up on this week including testing out a new ScreenBeam Pro which uses the Intel WiDi to beam your PC screen to an HDTV, also have a few Anker products and other products to finish up the reviews on.

I will say that I totally suck when it comes to putting on screen protectors on tablets, even with all the YouTube videos, flat cards, I cannot get rid of bubbles in the screens when stretching them across a 7” or 10” tablet no matter how methodical I try to be.  This is really a frustration and I have ruined 2 sets of screen protectors already for the Kindle Fire HDX trying to get them installed properly.  I feel like the Martin Short skit “Is it me, or is it him?”

Dreaming About Coffee Lately

My wife has always said I am a coffee addict and I never thought I believed her until I had a dream about coffee K-cups the other night that made me think I am bonkers.  Seriously in my dream I was participating in an experimental K-Cup program where a lab was making new experimental K-Cups and I was to sample them and report on the benefits from the new coffee flavors and strains.

image

I remember the sampling and flavors a little, mostly there was the promise of bigger energy boosts with no crash in a few hours and anti-oxidant rich coffees.  This may have something to do with the fact that I bought 3 boxes of K-Cups (my monthly supply) the day before but still this was the first really vivid dream I have had about drinking K-Cups and being the fact that I have 5-6 K-Cups of Keurig coffee per day I am thinking this is a new level of obsession for me.

Despite me getting the NutriBullet and drinking 1 healthy beverage per day of fruit and vegetables, I still find myself drinking far too many cups of coffee and need to start weaning them out.  I bought decaffeinated iced tea bags and have been making pitchers to help supplement drinking 1 cup of coffee per 2 glasses of iced decaf tea to help wean myself from the K-Cups a bit but I have not been successful so far.

Who else has ever had a coffee dream, am I the only one?

Elemental Kingdoms: Completed Scarlet Nation

The past few days I finally triumphed in collecting every star on the 8th map of Elemental Kingdoms which is also known as the Scarlet Nation, by far the most difficult Blackhaven Dungeon was difficult to defeat with my deck which still only has mostly Taiga General and 1 Santa as my five star cards, I do have 1 level 10 Fire Kirin but going up against that army is difficult.

2013-12-23 14.51.26

The game continues to hold my interest mostly in PVP battles and trying to see if I can uncover new holiday cards, I really want to try and score the Jack Frost 5 star card.

I also created my clan, and feel free to join the Dragoons and become part of my clan in Elemental Kingdoms.  The game is out for iOS and Android.

Merry Christmas to All

Merry Christmas to all my friends and family out there, another holiday comes and goes and as life moves in a blur we need to take the time to appreciate, remember and be with the ones we love.

I am still a kid at heart myself and love many of the things I still did when I was 20 years younger, this man child still loves muppets too!.

Muppets Bohemian Rhapsody
Muppets Ode to Joy
Muppets Ringing of the Bells
