Dressing on the Side

Do you know that by asking for salad dressing on the side and then lightly pouring a little dressing on your salad can significantly lower the amount of calories a restaurant salad has in it?

This is a good reason to always ask for dressing on the side which should be a standard reply when ordering any salad entrée, or any dinner that comes with a side salad.

Plain old olive oil and vinegar is a good option to keep it a little tangy and keep calorie count down as well.

Some simple decisions can help cut calorie intake and reduce guilt as well as keep your body fit.

Are Other Bloggers Allies or Competition?

You see the term “competition” being thrown around in many industries where companies or entrepreneurs are competing for the same customer base or in a blogger’s case reader base.

There is however something to be said about writing that doesn’t apply to many other companies and fields where you have a fixed service that is purchased and sold.  In blogging your customers are readers for the most part and the same readers can be fans and customers of many blog sites.  As for most readers there is no cost involved only time spent reading there is much more a likely chance that you can still find a good reason to friend other bloggers even in your same niche and form relationships that mutually benefit both sites.

Sure, two technology blogs may be competition but there is no possibility they will cover all the same tech articles all the time and there is room for additional sources of information.  There is the ability that you can partner and still find mutual benefits without directly considering each other off limit competition.

I don’t consider bloggers my competition no matter the field, I consider them all fisherman launching boats in the same ocean.  There is plenty of crab to catch, and no quota limits.  If some struggle and need tips or help to catch more crab, I am sure to give some advice where I can.  May the best men win their share.

The Dark Knight Rises July 2012

Okay, so it is still 11 months before The Dark Knight rises hits theaters and this movie will have epic expectations placed up on it with the success of The Dark Knight breaking many records at the Box office and beyond.  Will the success of The Dark Knight turn out more to do with Heath Ledgers stunning performance or will Chris Nolan’s vision of batman and this variation continue to grab audiences.

Here is the latest preview:

With Anne Hathaway playing Catwoman along with Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Morgan Freeman reprising their respective roles from the Dark Knight this film certainly didn’t show too much in the trailer.  I am curious to see how Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Bane will be and whether it will be compared to the Joker.

How many of you are looking forward to the final chapter of The Dark Knight saga led by Chris Nolan?

Rabbit Destroys Roku

Yes, I installed a Roku with flat LCD TV in my kids bedroom on the wall a few weeks ago.  Yes the Rabbit named Fluffykins had his cage sitting under the TV a little close to the power cords that ran from both the TV and the Roku XD box to the outlet.

IMG_0056

I didn’t assume that the rabbit would be clever enough to somehow pull the cords into the cage and chew them so badly that the Roku XD was toast.  The wiring was so badly chewed I am just glad the bunny didn’t electrocute himself!

Here was the pictures of the cable damage from a household Lop Bunny!

Note, I was able to cut the cord at both ends, and splice the wires together wrapping it with electrical tape which prevented from having to buy a new power supply for the Roku XD.

I have now installed hooks on the wall that keep the wiring well away from the cage and should prevent an incident like this from happening again.

Late Night Spent at the Blooze Bar

It was a long night seeing Razer in concert at the Blooze Bar for their Dark Devotion Expanded CD Release party.  My wife and I became fans of razer just around 3 years ago and enjoy their original rock / metal music.

razer2It has however been months since I was out at a club until 2am and with a one hour drive back to Casa Grande, it is quite a thing to recover from.  I never could understand how party goers could go to clubs one or two nights every weekend and party until 4am only to go to work on Monday back to normal.

Maybe it is because I am just getting old, or maybe I am just way too used to being a hermit in my own house but I just couldn’t ever get used to the staying out until 4am lifestyle.

Back to School Means More Clothes

Kids grow like weeds when they are young and it is hard to believe but my seven year old outgrow many of his pants that he wore just a few short months ago during the summer.  I am not talking waist size either but the length of his pants are now too short.

So it meant some quick back to school shopping for Kids Clothes and haircuts over the past 7 days to get my kids prepped for school starting this Monday.  Typically I try to save as much money as possible knowing they will outgrow clothing so quickly.

[easyazon-image-link asin=”B004W6J7ES” alt=”True Religion Boys 2-7 Billy Army Green Cornelli Bootcut Jean, Huckleberry, 6″ src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41jfgWbcc2L.jpg” align=”left” width=”150″ ]The good news is that I have two boys ages 7 and 4 so that when my seven year old outgrows clothes if the clothing is still in decent shape we store it and use a year or two later for my younger son.  This means yes, we do the hand me down thing in my house too when it comes to clothing.  Sneakers and shoes never survive long enough to be handed down however, my oldest with his scooter can tear through a pair of sneakers in two months where he uses either his heel or the tip of his sneaker to stop him and it wears a hole right through to expose his toes.  Even with reinforced sneakers we wind up having to buy a pair of sneakers every few months.

No wonder why my mother used to complain so much about my brother and I destroying and ruining our clothes as a kid.  I just didn’t get it until I had two boys of my own just how much money is spent buying clothing that barely lasts a month in some cases.  We sometimes save some money by finding second hand clothes but rarely find sizes that fit properly and not worth paying to have kids clothes tailored.

New Theme coming for AZMusicConnect

Been helping my wife recently on my spare time with getting a new WordPress theme up and ready for AZMusicConnect which is the #1 Arizona Music Blog on the Internet.

image

Her team of writers are dedicated to reviewing and bringing the latest in local Arizona music entertainment and write some great reviews and bio’s on local bands trying to get some attention and following in Arizona.

In addition the site showcases local artists, venues and general music news in the industry.  It is a site that my wife has grown as a spin off of her Rock Along Productions company and has taken a life of it’s own.

In fact, her AZMusicConnect Facebook account has 2x as many friends as my own account and she has a huge local following.  It is an ideal site for Arizona businesses who want to target locals to get involved with.

If you are a resident of Arizona and interested in the music scene then Arizona Music Connect is a must have in your browser favorites or bookmarks.

Tweaking RSS Feeds for DragonBlogger.com

So this week I had been working on updating the DragonBlogger.com RSS Feeds so that I would no longer just offer 1 general feed for the site, but instead allow readers to choose a feed based on their area or topic of interest.  This included Technology, Gaming, Entertainment, Blogging feeds to be setup on Feedburner and configured for customized emails, Pingshot and share buttons.

Now with separate feeds it will start to dilute the amount of “single” # of subscribers button, I don’t have an easy way to display the # of subscribers from multiple feed sources combined so not sure the best approach to manually share the # of subscribers or just leave off the number of subscribers altogether.

I have read that advertisers look at that Feedburner chicklet and seeing thousands of subscribers is a good indication of strong loyal mail following for sure.

Either way, I just wanted to make it easier for readers to get the articles they were most interested in as I had some people unsubscribing whenever an article posted that wasn’t in the topic they particularly wanted to read.

I also had some feedburner issues that I had to resolve with my feed size being overlimit earlier in the week.

If you want to check out the DragonBlogger RSS Feed page and see how I set it up with various feeds and subscription options click the link and share your feedback.

4 Online Entrepreneur Startup Tips

I haven’t entered in many blog post contests recently and thought to change that when I saw I had the opportunity to write a post about startup tips while entering into a blog marketing contest for BloggersCompete.com at the same time.

So here are my Online Entrepreneur Startup Tips

Decide What You Want To Do

Simple right?  I mean you want to make money online, what is there to decide?  The problem is there are so many avenues to attempt to earn money online, especially in the startup space that you literally can fail if you don’t take the time to learn how it works and setup some basic strategies.

First is that you have to decide whether you want to sell other peoples products / services, or create a product or service you want to sell and offer.  If you have no product or service in mind that you want to directly offer, don’t worry you can start out by being an affiliate for other products in a general area of interest and when you finally create your own product or service offering you can switch to it later.

Do You Want To Make Money

Do you want to write paid reviews (much harder to make money at than you think) or do you want to try to earn passively from AdSense, Kontera, PayPerView / PayPerClick hits?  There are many sites and entrepreneurs who earn good livings off of AdSense, Infolinks and other click based systems.  It is much tougher than it used to be but the potential to earn is still there.  Many who succeed in this area create more than one and in some cases dozens of smaller sites all designed to capture different search traffic and capitalize off of the clicks.

Do you want to sell specific products like eBooks, Gadgets, Jewelry or do you want to build a kind of online Store like am Amazon aStore?  Again there is a ton of competition but if you market it right and learn about niches that you could target and really gain the lead in you have potential to make good earnings.

Do The Research

Once you focus generally on what type of venture you want to start up you have to go about doing the research on whether there is room for your site and attempts.  Use services like Google Keywords Tool to analyze global and local searches to see if enough searches are done about your product/service that you will get organic traffic.  Find some competitors and view their page source codes looking at their Title, META Description, META Keywords and how they formulate their content/site design.  Find things that could use improving and improve upon it.

When affiliate marketing the same product as other people you need to make sure your site is faster, easier, is more compelling and ranks better than your competitors.  The same holds true with your own product/service except you aren’t selling the exact same thing because it is your offering not somebody else’s you are reselling.

Invest The Time

Business aren’t built overnight and though online startups are much faster to bring on board than a brick and mortar business many fail to realize that dropping a fish in the ocean is a lot harder than having a physical store front that people have to drive or walk past everyday and can’t “not see”.  It takes constant dedication and interaction with social media, SEO optimization and if you have a little initial investment and have a product/service of your own you could experiment with AdWords, or other ad services to try and get a head start.  Just make sure you have a fully tested and working process before you pay to advertise it or you could end up frustrating your customers.

These are just some of the start up tips I have learned and follow myself when bringing a new venture online in my blogging or affiliate marketing niches and on a final note BloggersCompete is an interesting new service which allows bloggers to sponsor contests from a centralized point and build organic backlinks and traffic through creation of those contests.  I think the concept has merit and may tap into something that hasn’t really been done well yet for bloggers looking for a way to not only run their own contests, but have their contests reach an audience to gain more participation.  Obviously this is for blog contests where the contestants write posts and include some instructions from the advertiser and win a cash prize but I can see other prize offerings being there in the future.

Still Dealing with Some Web Hosting Issues

I am still struggling with some issues with my new VPS hosting from MyHosting and working to iron out the details and figure out how to solve the problems.  My latest issue was when trying to setup Amazon S3 for my JustinGermino.com blog and just trying to sync files with the W3 Total Cache plugin caused the entire VPS to go down.

[easyazon-image-link asin=”B004UW29IK” alt=”WordPress Power Guide – Using WordPress to Blog Your Way to Success – Blogging Guide” src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JUWmy1MIL.jpg” align=”right” width=”250″]This means that all 5 blogs get connection timeout errors, my FTP, SSH connections immediately terminate and I can no longer access my CPanel or in anyway contact my VPS Host.  It is like the entire VPS crashes and goes off the network just by trying to sync files to Amazon S3.

In addition my wife noticed she can recreate this issue sometimes when uploading images to her blog site.  There seems to be some issue with # of connections or something that keeps the VPS unstable.

I am working with the MyHosting tech guy who brought me in and helped tune things previously to see if we can increase stability and figure out how to resolve these issues.  I checked online and couldn’t find anything at all with Google searches even closely related to my issues and since my entire VPS collapses when I test this I can’t really watch logs or performance in real time since all my connections get disconnected.

In the meantime, I may be having some random outages on my Poetry, Personal blogs until we get this figured out and resolved.
