D&D Next: One Last Roll of the Dice?

Dungeons and Dragons is by far the most well-known Role Playing Game (RPG), virtually synonymous with the pen-and-paper side of the genre. Officially launched by TSR in 1974, the first edition took a Tolkien-influenced variant of tabletop war gaming and turned it into something new; a flexible system of cooperative storytelling that set the standard for every RPG that was to follow.

Nearly four decades later, the D&D story has a new chapter in the form of “D&D Next,” a thorough re-envisioning of the way that the game is played. Announced in January 2012, this upcoming edition is scheduled for release next year, and is currently undergoing the second phase of open playtesting.

Wizards of the Coast, the game’s publisher, plans to use the playtesting to spread the word, make essential tweaks to the mechanics, and most of all to get feedback from a wide range of D&D players and DMs. From the purists, WotC wants to firmly establish a connection with D&D’s enduring themes and fundamentals; from the newer, more casual players, the developers hope to get an idea how to make the game intuitive and fun with a minimum of needless complexity.

According to Mike Mearls, D&D’s project manager at WotC, “The game has the open-ended nature of AD&D, the character flexibility of 3e, and the clarity and ease of DMing of 4e.”

This is far more than an evolution, however; for the company and many players, this is a final chance to salvage D&D from the downhill course that the game has been on for decades. A few doubters have already taken to referring to the new edition as “D&D Last,” reflecting just how fragile a position the game is in. D&D Next needs to succeed in a big way.

There are any number of reasons for declining sales and interest in D&D. In the big picture, it was perhaps inevitable that many potential pen-and-paper players turned instead toward PC and console RPGs, an option that was unavailable during the first two decades of D&D’s existence.

Ironically, part of D&D’s dire situation is the result of D&D’s successes. As more people became interested in RPGs, other RPGs appeared; and the better ones began to lure players away from the game that had essentially started it all. Subsequent editions of D&D altered the rule set enough to give longtime players reason to criticize the direction that the franchise was taking, especially after D&D was acquired from TSR in 1997 by Wizards of the Coast.

A large number of critics point toward shortcomings of the 4th Edition, in use since 2008. Many players even dismissed the revision and stayed with the 3.5 version, developing and balancing its rule set into various “forks” of the game. The most popular of these, Pathfinder, is considered by a large number of former and new D&D players to be a superior game; in no small part to the open playtesting that informed its development. At the time, the playtest was the largest of its kind ever, and Wizards of the Coast is obviously hoping to reap some of the same results with the series of D&D Next playtests.

Because of the “as long as it takes” approach of the development, many details have changed (both from one playtest to another, and even during a single phase) and many major “big picture” elements are as yet unaddressed. We know that WotC plans to give DMs more leeway for creative adaptations to the rules, to the extent that they’ll be able to take or leave anything that ends up in the final version. Perhaps all of this will allow D&D to recapture some of the reputation and prominence that the game once had, or perhaps it truly will be “D&D Last”.

Google Restored PageRank for Technology Blog

After over a year of having all PageRank stripped away from my technology blog Google finally responded in a Web Master Tools reconsideration request with the following:

The webspam team had taken manual action on your site because we believed it violated our quality guidelines. After reviewing your reconsideration request, we have revoked this manual action.

Dragonblogger.com now has an established PageRank score again though slightly lower than the PR4 it had last year it is now a PR3.

How Did I Lose PageRank?

Last year in reviewing more online services that paid bloggers, I tested Intellilinks, Teliad and Linkvehicle.  Just to see how much could be made from such services and if it was worth trying to make some money from your site with these services compared to the risks of violating Google Terms of Service.

3 months after testing these services Google sent me a letter in Web Master Tools that they detected links that violate their ToS and were stripping my site of all PageRank.

I waiting until my term for those tests expired and then removed all links for the testing but it took 2 follow up tests 3 months and 9 months later before Google was willing to reconsider, they rejected my request the 1st two times.

Lessons Learned

Do not use any online program like Intellilinks, LinkVehicle, Teliad where you are putting in a "dofollow" link in exchange for compensation.  Even though I had made several hundred dollars during the test, the penalty cost me far more in the end.

Handy Power Outlet with USB Plugs

When I travel I have so many devices that I often overwhelm the limited number of power outlets in a hotel room or even most houses that I visit.  This is why I invested in several outlet adapters and mini surge protectors over the past few months and one that I like is the Belkin Mini Surge Protector with Dual USB Charger.

usboutlet

This one has 3 outlets and 2 USB ports which can help charge up to 5 devices, the only problem is the USB ports can only charge phones and not tablets.  So you would just plug your tablet/notebook outlets into the A/C port and then USB ports can charge your Bluetooth earpiece plus your iPhone or Android phone.

Typically that is my setup, I have my Notebook, iPad 2 plugged into the A/C outlets (my wife’s notebook when she travels with me is the 3rd slot).  I then use the USB to charge both of our iPhone’s or 1 iPhone and my Voyager Pro Bluetooth earpiece.

usboutlet2

For less than $12, this Dual USB Mini Surge Protector is well worth the price and gives you the ability to charge 5 devices from a single A/C outlet.

It also has a rotating plug in the back, so you can point the device in whichever way makes it more convenient to not block the other free A/C port.

It comes with 1 mini USB cable to use for Blackberry or some other phones, but overall you should have your own USB cables already.

Spotting Burrowing Owls

I take the boys for walks nearly every morning lately with the dogs, and happened to have my phone handy when we walked past a family of burrowing owls.  I snapped off shots as quickly as possible before they took off in flight to avoid my dogs which started barking at them.

owl

They are really cool looking and very small for owls, they are about a foot tall at most and they just stare and cock their heads when you walk by.  They live in an undeveloped water runoff area near the community and I remember when the babies where nesting in the ground with fur on their heads instead of feathers yet.

Cancelled The Secret World Subscription

I loved the idea of The Secret World more than the actual game it turned out, the idea of playing in an action horror MMO set in modern day times was really enticing and to run around as a modern day gunslinger uncovering secret society plots and fighting demons, undead and monstrosities from beyond was something right out of a Stephen King novel.

I did actually enjoy the game a bit, but ultimately it never grabbed hold of me to delve further and make it a long lasting game due in part to my life situation where it is and also due to the lack of what I really love at core.

No Fantasy Genre

Sword and sorcery is just where it’s at for me, there is something lacking in such a dark universe where everything is shades of dark grey with no true heroes and villains or worse villains and vile demons being the only real choices.  I missed the fantasy aspect of it, the rescues the knights, kingdoms, paladins and high level good vs. evil aspect.

Not Family Friendly

I have two boys ages 5 and 8 now and most of my game time involves having to play something either with or around them.  This means Wizard 101 dominates most of my gaming time, but Runes of Magic was clean RPG MMO fun too.  The Secret World was just Adults Only oriented and not something I could enjoy playing with my kids or around my kids due to the horror and disturbing elements of the game.  Again, cool if you love horror but not really kid and family friendly.

Monthly Subscription Fee

The $14.99 per month is very steep, and honestly I don’t think any game is worth paying $60 for the retail box and then another $170+ per year for the monthly subscription.  It was worth testing, but with Star Wars: The Old Republic going free to play in the fall, I predict The Secret World will adopt a free to play model at some point as well.  There are just too few games to spend that much playing just one.  Guild Wars 2 for example is a 1x $59.99 and no monthly subscription and the model worked very very well for the first Guild Wars and expansion packs.

In the end, The Secret World was a temporary distraction but the mechanics of the game and the darker elements rooted in reality just weren’t as fun for me as the fantasy genre.  This is one reason why I also gave up on Star Wars: The Old Republic after three months, it was fun but side quests were too repetitive and it just lost appeal with thousands of jedi/sith everywhere and no real sense of rarity with such characters.

About the CCDP Cisco Certification Exam

The CCDP or Certified Design Professional is a design certification, and an advanced one at that. The CCDP validates that professionals possess the knowledge of the workings of Cisco devices and innovative and new ways to interconnect to them. With this type of certification, a professional can create an advanced security network, data center or network management. You must be actively certified with a CCDA in order to complete the exam. There have been some changes to the exams offered for this certification but currently these are the exams you are required to pass.

image

• 642-902 ROUTE

• 642-813 SWITCH

• 642-874 ARCH

The CCDP certification has two exams in common with CCNP and CCDP certifications; ideally a person that has already received their CCNP and CCDA could obtain their CCDP certification and take only one test, the 642-873 ARCH. You can find help studying for these exams at tests live, where all the material to help you pass is available.

A Cisco Certified Design Professional possesses knowledge of network design concepts and principles and can create the most advanced network architectures, building multi-layered switched networks and building scalable internetworks. With this level of education you can improve the quality of the networks you create, raise your salary and advance your career.

In the IT industry it can never hurt to keep advancing and picking up more career certifications and if you work with routers, switches and firewalls then picking up a Certified Design Professional certification can help improve your resume and make you a more attractive prospect for employment.

Deer Knight Spell in Wizard 101

So after waiting weeks and trying various Knights Lore packs in Wizard 101 my son finally got the permanent spell of Deer Knight added to his spell deck.  This is one of the rarest cards you can get with the Knights Lore pack.  Anytime you win a card that gets permanently added to your spell deck is a great thing as permanent spells are rare compared to treasure cards.

Picture 2012-08-11 19-08-53

The Deer Knight is a death spell that not only does damage against all opponents but also leaves a lasting damage marker which continues to do damage for several more turns in addition to the initial damage.

Some of the spell animations are truly fun to watch in Wizard 101 and Deer Knight is one of the coolest Death spells that costs 5 pips and is a great choice for those who have Death as their primary school (or who have a Death mastery pendant).

Personally as a Storm Wizard for my primary class and Life as my secondary class I am hoping to get the Catalan card as a permanent spell card in my deck.

It did take about 15 purchases of the 399 crown Knights Lore pack to win the Deer Knights spell.  It is random, as my youngest son got it on his 3rd pack.

Need to Update Life Insurance Soon

I can’t believe my 10 year term life insurance has almost come up and I now have to go through the process of getting another policy, where has the time gone?

I remember getting my policy when my wife was pregnant with our first child and wanting to make sure everyone would be covered just in case.  But this is a good time for me to look at adding additional coverage and shopping around more for different companies.

Diversifying I think would be best and having two policies with 2 different companies may be a better benefit than one larger policy with one company.

I will do some research and make the best choices to cover my family, meanwhile I remember reading in Dave Ramsey’s book about term life insurance being the best option until you can pay off enough debt and then start saving enough income so that you don’t have to have any life insurance.  The book outlined that whole life and universal life were never a good investment compared to paying off debt and investing in yourself where a better return than you could receive from a more expensive health care coverage.

Either way time to do some investigation and research on something I hadn’t had to look at in quite a few years.

Rafflecopter Contests are Facebook Compliant

Rafflecopter recently announced that they have official compliance from Facebook for their contests, though they had to remove the entry option "like this post" for all contests going forward after July 20th 2012.

This means you don’t have to worry about being non-Facebook compliant if you run a Rafflecopter contest and campaign from your blog post or your fanpage itself since you can embed the Rafflecopter contest into an iFrame tab on your Facebook fanpage if you want.

image

I tend to run all of my contest on Rafflecopter as it does an excellent job of tracking all of the entries (even with some ability to cheat the custom entries) it makes running contests so much easier.  It does only support random winners at the moment, so if you want to run a contest that focuses on building your mailing list and one where the winner is the one who collects the most entries then something like Contest Domination for WordPress is an ideal contest plugin that can really help grow your mailing list quickly and doesn’t use Facebook as entry methods, only subscribing to your mailing list and promoting your contest across social media to get more users to subscribe and enter the contest.

Read more about Rafflecopter and how they are compliant with the Facebook Giveaway Rules and Regulations here:
