Compiling Holiday Movies

It happens every year, one of our traditions is to compile home movies from all the previous Christmas mornings and Xmas Eve nights so that the kids can watch and see how they reacted to the presents in previous years.  I started the home recordings back in 2006 when Oliver was born and the kids get a kick out of seeing themselves as baby’s and toddlers asking for some odd items and going banana’s over unwrapping gifts.

I can’t believe my oldest is 10 this year and I remember when they were just wee lads barely able to walk and crawl toward everything.  I miss the simplicity of things back then and when reflecting I see just how fast time really flies.

We watch the videos on Christmas Eve, I love the fact that I can just put the movies on a USB flash drive and plug the USB into my Samsung TV and then watch them right from the TV.  Easy and convenient as heck, more convenient than having to upload to a cloud and stream to TV via another service anyway.

Xmas tradition has always been to let the kids open 1 present on Xmas Eve to help with the anxiety that comes with waiting, and they usually have a blast picking out 1 present.  This year will be no exception and I know they will have another great Xmas.

Last Nights Loading the Kindle Fire HDX

So as my readers may have known I have purchased both of my kids Kindle Fire HDX devices as their Christmas presents this year, my choice was based on the fact they already were very used to their 1st generation Kindle Fires though they both had plug connector issues after their 1st year and one finally would not charge anymore.  The Google Nexus 7 was heavily considered, but I opted against it only because of the truly open nature of Android and found it to be more potentially problematic for my 7 and 10 year olds.  The fact that there are a unfiltered apps and games of all sorts of questionable quality with no quality management, higher degree of malware/adware and other junk against the relative safety of the Amazon Android App store was the deciding factor. This in addition to the fact that neither had SD Card support, if the Nexus 7 had MicroSD card support then I would have chosen it.

[easyazon-image align=”center” asin=”B00BHJRYYS” locale=”us” height=”500″ src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51UWFjHzSIL.jpg” width=”500″]

So as Amazon still releases 1 free app/game per day, I am busy collecting the last few free app/games that I think my kids would like and will fully charge, pack and then wrap the Kindle Fire HDX devices on Christmas Eve. Almost all the other gifts are wrapped already.

There are a lot of good and better apps for the Kindle Fire HDX already though it still lacks compared to the iTunes app store and the Google Play store, it is coming along and with the Kindle line of tablets being so popular and having so many models I think more game developers will try to get their Google Play versions of the apps into the Amazon Android App store.

I bought some cases which were the i-Blason cases which had a lot of great features for the price, the Origami cases are awesome but far to expensive to get as compliments for the Kindle Fire HDX for my kids this year.

Picked up Some New Tundra Cards in Elemental Kingdoms

Tis the season to be Jolly, and in Elemental Kingdoms for the iPad which now also has an app for Android I picked up some seasonal cards finally after searching for days and spending gold like it was going out of season.

2013-12-06 07.20.11

First I was able to get a Milk and Cookies card which you use to Enchant and level up other cards, this baby was able to help me make one of my other cards reach level 10.

2013-12-20 06.54.02

Then, I checked in all 20 days in a row and earned the Ice Golem card, each day you check in you get rewards and some of my best cards came from earning those gems or fire tokens just for doing my daily check in.  When this Ice Golem reaches level 10 his ability to add +200 attack to all other Tundra cards will be a great asset.

2013-12-19 15.13.50

Finally the big man, Santa made his way into my deck.  He has a great starter ability reflecting any Fire, Ice, Lightning or Blood attack causing 210 damage to the caster and his level 5 ability Warpath is unique and this ability wasn’t seen until the Holiday cards.  I would have liked to also have seen him have immunity to all spells as his level 10 instead of just resistance as he gets trounced by cards that cause Trap and they really reduce his effectiveness.

Starbound a Whole New Level of Fun

You know it’s funny, I bought Minecraft to play with my kids but never really got into that much and I enjoyed playing with them even though I personally myself didn’t really like the game that much.  I am not quite sure why actually, but a similar game of open world (or universe rather) mining, crafting and creating called Starbound and I can say I am having a blast and not just playing because I enjoy doing what the kids want to do, but I am totally hooked on the game.

I would have to thank Colby Mort who did Starbound YouTube Videos like the one you see below for Dragon Blogger.

Starbound Series

Because of his intro to Starbound and covering the series my kids watched his videos as they watch all the videos on my Dragon Blogger channel and wanted the game.  I also was fascinated, I saw that Steam had a deal where you get 4 copies of Starbound for the price of 3 and I snapped it up, getting a copy for both my boys, myself and one which I will giveaway to a reader for DragonBlogger.

The game is highly addicting and is a 2d sidescrolling version of Minecraft except it has what seems to be an infinite number of worlds, space ships where you travel to and from different biomes to explore all on the same server and far more creatures, ores, and options.  Plus it has mods too, and all this from a game that is technically not even officially released yet and is still in Beta.

Though you can pre-order the game now and get immediate access, setting up your own server is actually very easy and it consumes less resources to host a server on your own PC than it does hosting a Minecraft server.  The game seems more stable, less prone to memory leaks than Minecraft and this is probably because it is 2D.

It truly is epic and worth every penny and my kids were hooked immediately, if your kids love Minecraft, I think they will find Starbound to be phenomenal giving them even more options and worlds to explore.  I can say that the crafting in some ways is simpler because you get exactly the details on what you need for each recipe, but it is also harder because there are more crafting table types and far more items to craft.  I like that bows don’t require a finite number of arrows, but the game is much harder.

You can die from being out in the cold without getting to a campfire to warm up, you can die from hunger, die from monsters, and drown.  The game is more challenging than Minecraft (at least to me) and it helps to have allies and play multiplayer.

Starbound just wowed me in every way, and I have to admit this is the new game addiction as far as I am concerned.

Changing Plugins to Link to Affiliate Programs

I realized just yesterday that WP-Hypnolinks was shut down and no longer officially exists, I had been using this plugin for over a year to do all my affiliate linking on blog posts on several of my sites.  This was a great alternative to Pretty Link Pro, Ninja Affiliate and was lightning fast at rendering a large number of links with a lot of flexibility.

I augmented it with the LinkSmart program which goes above and beyond just simply creating affiliate links, LinkSmart which I did a review on back in June 2013 is basically a full cloud based linker that finds your most common keywords, tracks clicks, impressions and even allows for dynamic keyword changes and uploads on the fly.

Read my review of LinkSmart on DragonBlogger here: http://www.dragonblogger.com/linksmart-wordpress-integration-for-analytics-and-affiliate-marketing/

They also have the marketplace coming which once in place gives advertisers the ability to purchase some link advertising on your site by targeting your best keywords.  This also is Google ToS compliant because there are no dofollow links for advertisers, in fact there are no links recorded in the HTML source code at all.  The links are rendered after the page is loaded on the browser and all content is served from the cloud which does not put strain on your hosting provider or database which is something most WordPress plugins do to track link clicks and such.

Anyway, I haven’t transitioned off of WP-Hypnolinks yet, but Pretty Link Pro is awesome and recommended.  LinkSmart is fantastic but has one drawback in that you can’t disable it for specific posts, I need this functionality because when you do sponsored posts you don’t want your affiliate links competing with your sponsored links or advertisers content.  Pretty Link Pro allows you to disable on specific posts which makes it advertiser and sponsor friendly.

Going to See Mannheim Steamroller

Every year my wife and I try to do a holiday concert and last year we saw Trans-Siberian Orchestra who were awesome.  This year my wife treated us to tickets to see Mannheim Steamroller and this is legendary for me as I have been listening to their Christmas albums every year since I was a kid and the first album was released.  I literally can’t listen to Mannheim Steamroller without flashbacks and childhood memories of staying up late on Xmas Eve and just listening to the music all night long while waiting for Santa to arrive.

It doesn’t feel like Christmas in the air unless Mannheim Steamroller is blasting away in our house on the iPod hooked up to Bluetooth speakers.  I listen to customized playlists of their music on my Spotify and it is always on the radio stations that convert to Christmas classics for this time of year.

So I am sure the Mannheim Steamroller concert will be great here at the Ikeda Theater in Mesa, we are going to a nice dinner first.

What are your favorite holiday music tunes to listen to?

Children Sponsoring Kids Through Children International

So every year we had done the Christmas Angels program and other Toys for Tots programs to get toys for a needy kid here in Arizona, but this year my wife proposed something different to the children and their reaction and enthusiasm toward it really increased my pride level by a couple of thousand experience points.

My wife at dinner last night proposed the idea of sponsoring a kid in need all year long instead of just getting one time presents for a child, this would provide necessities and more than simply a toy or present for Christmas and the children would be allowed to search and find the kid they want to help.

Sure enough my son’s who are 7 and 10 years old spent about 20 minutes on https://www.children.org/ and after searching through various countries, they on their own decided on chose a child from Zambia who was 7 years old.  The reason they said were first and foremost that the kid was on the Most Needy List and the read how Lameck slept on a floor mat in a concrete wall house with concrete roof and there was no electricity, they had only a community water supply.  Both of my kids lit up and immediately started thinking how they can help, Oliver wanted to donate as many items in his closet as he could find and suggested we buy him a proper bed.

image

The great thing is now they will be able to write letters, keep in touch electronically too as both your sponsored child and your family get to share photos, emails and more.  The kids also wondered how Lameck would read their letters if they wrote him in English and Lameck spoke Nyanja.  I mentioned how we could use Google Translate and send two copies, and probably there would be someone to read him the letters.  Of course on my first sweep I couldn’t find any Nyanja language translation as it isn’t an option in Google Translate but I am sure I can find something.

Meanwhile, I was so proud of my boys for the enthusiasm and altruism they showed in wanting to help and sponsor a child in need all year long.  I also was really glad my wife came up with the idea and presented to the children and let them decide which course of donation they wanted to pursue this year.

I know that my kids will help make the world a better place someday in their own way, they will touch some peoples lives and if everyone just connected and helped a few others lives, the world would be so much better off.

Happy Thanksgiving To All My Friends and My Wife

For all of those who I have met and had conversations with in 2013 I want to say thanks, I have met so many new people online through blogging and helped mentor others.  I have met people grateful, hopeful and respectful and I have met those who were pessimistic, sarcastic and depressed.  Everyone has their ups and their downs, everyone has blessings and curses in their lives but all of us have one thing in common and that is we are still living and we are at least talking with one or more people to share what is going on in our lives and how we are doing and nearly all of us have at least one person who we care about and how they are doing and listen to their troubles, their problems and try to offer advice and counsel because we care.

So my thanks is to everyone who cares, cares about anyone else, cares about causes to better man kind, help others, provide help just because you want to or it’s the right thing to do.  We are social creatures and this social nature has found a way to branch online and allow us to forge relationships, friendships with people we may never meet in person.  This is something that is unique to the human race and something to consider.  The fact that I have so many people I know and talk to in countries I have never visited and may not ever visit is astounding.  This is the opportunity to learn about cultures foreign and I am thankful and hopeful that all the walls of bigotry, hatred, intolerance will eventually be broken down by our ability to communicate with nearly everyone globally.

So if you haven’t yet, take time to forge some friendships with people in other locales, learn about their environments, culture and more.  When I first started blogging, it was bloggers in the Philippines that I met online first, people like JP, Rey Jr., Lorenzo Berandino aka. Zorlone and I started paying more attention to the area, the people.  It wasn’t long before many Indians like Samir, Abhi the Odd Blogger, and so many others became people I met and conversed with online. Even recently Pakistani bloggers like Umer who runs Techocafe.com I have met and we had conversations about blogging and more.  I could name dozens and dozens of names of people who I know as a result of starting blogs and interacting online and each of these people have left a lasting impression on me.

Thanks to the following people who have interacted with me and either have provided great information, fun reads, or just I found entertaining over the past year.  Don’t be offended if you aren’t listed, this is just a selection of the many people who I have interacted with in 2013.

I am also the MOST thankful for my wife, year after year she never ceases to amaze me.  She is more human than human sometimes with everything she has to deal with and still has time to care about me and all else that goes in the household and she is everything to me for the past 17 years.  She has given me the two best boys in the world and is such a devoted, loving and caring mother. I will also say that she seems to have a more difficult time than most, life seems to throw more challenges her way than many others, sure there are always people worse off and some better off, but I have seen how much she gets hit with and she does her best to juggle it all.  She is one of the smartest people I have ever met, and will always forever be the most beautiful to me as well.

So thanks to whatever destiny, fate, deity brought this lovely woman into my life because I am thankful just as much 17 years later as I was the year we met.

Focusing is the Key to Efficiency

I did a video interview with Social Web Café the other day and Deb made a comment on just how much I have going on at the same time and we talked a little bit about efficiency, automation and being able to manage so many channels, blogs and tasks at once.  I thought about the things over the years that were inefficient and required trimming as well as the items which helped me focus to become more productive at all my various tasks and responsibilities and one of the key items was focus.  Focusing on the task at hand without distraction is probably the most significant way to be efficient now.

I was always prone to massive distraction, having a bit of a hyperactive issue (probably some mild undiagnosed ADD and ADHD) I tend to think about fifty things at the same time and constantly task switch, I call it task switch because humans truly aren’t capable of multitasking.  Our brains are like single thread CPU’s and we merely keep changing focus constantly when we choose to do multiple tasks at the same time.  This leads to incredible inefficiency and you are never 100% focused on one task but instead let’s say 2 tasks get 70% of the full attention if you attempt them at the same time, I won’t say it is an exact 50% divide but the brain does have a hard time doing one thing, quickly switching and doing something else, switching back to what you were originally doing and repeating.

This is especially a disaster in writing/blogging and in programming/scripting, where being distracted or being interrupted can ruin a train of thought, a groove if you will and leave you spending minutes trying to remember where you were at and where you wanted to go with what you were doing.  This is one reason why Social Media as great as it is for bloggers can be a huge inefficiency for those who are trying to work on producing content.  You need to know when to turn off the distractions, even if they provide meaningful value to complete the tasks at hand.

Here is a list of ways to improve efficiency at least while writing/blogging but can apply with some adaptation to other areas of work as well.

Dedicate a Time Frame

Set a time where you will work on something and then you will do nothing else but work on that item.  I do this at my day job, if I need to put myself in Do Not Disturb and spend 30 minutes doing nothing but working on that Power Point presentation for management.  I also do the same thing when blogging such as not checking emails or Facebook for a good 1/2 hour while I do nothing but test a product or write a blog post.  This one alone is a good example.

Music Sets the Mood

When writing for me, sometimes music can really put me into a writing groove.  Find something that matches your mood and preferably if you are require attention to detail then something that doesn’t have vocals like a soundtrack is perfect as you don’t try to sing along or hear the lyrics which can interfere with you writing words.  If I get some good tunes going I can often just churn out a good 3 or 4 blog posts in an hour or even write documentation at work or something like that.  This is ideal when you can be uninterrupted without any calls and can dedicate some time and at least 30 minutes to working on something.

30 Minutes Like Candy Crush

You notice how I keep coming back to 30 minute segments?  It is like Candy Crush which is a game I never played actually but I have read about how it teaches people to escape for those 30 minute segments of play.  You can break your day out into 30 minute blocks of efficiencies and plan ahead to be really efficient.  How about after dinner one night, you try and think about your next day, break your 8 hour work day (assuming 8 hours) into sixteen 30 minute segments and figure out what you will be doing each of those 30 minutes.  Say for your first 30 minutes you will get through as many emails as possible, then you will stop checking all emails and the next 30 minutes you spend working on another task.  If some tasks can’t be done in 30 minutes, take a full hour and remember to add 2 15 minute breaks or 3 10 minute breaks to re-charge, walk around, run around the block, or jog up and down some stairs if you are in a multi-level building to get the blood flowing.

Automation is Key

Despite the appearance that we are everywhere all the time, we need to rest, sleep, have family time and our own time away unplugged.  This is where automation is key as when you are an online presence your content is accessible 24×7 and your audience is also 24×7 just because you published an article at 6am doesn’t mean you can’t set up some scheduled tweets or social media promotions at 8pm to make sure your audience in distant time zones just starting their cup of coffee can’t see what you wrote in their morning news feed.

I leverage tools like Hootsuite Pro, Gremln, to make sure content is queued for all hours of the day and night.  Hootsuite also has a hootlet tool where you install on your browser and just click and autoschedule articles you visit for later, it works very similar to Buffer but can reach far more networks on the cheaper plan.  Buffer has some better limitations on number of shares per day however to prevent too much automated sharing.

Hootsuite lets you connect 50 networks on the pro plan and this allows you to broadcast your articles or information into everything from LinkedIn Groups to Facebook Groups and fanpages.  It even lets you hook your blog RSS feed and auto publish it to your Google Plus Business Page too.

Hire Freelancers

Finally, I don’t freelance social media communications but I do freelance some graphic design work, some written articles when I need something specific covered and none of my main freelance writers are available and when I need some extra promotion or marketing for something.  Sometimes you just don’t have the time to do everything and knowing where to spend and re-invest some of your earnings from your online ventures can help improve efficiency and free you up to create the content.  I have heard of people even hiring VPA (Virtual Private Assistants) who can sort through emails, bring important items to attention, do research and collect information, run surveys, and more.

Bottom line, is think about each day as slices of time and dedicate those blocks of time to doing 1 task at a time, don’t try and converse on Facebook and Twitter and write a blog post at the same time.  You will end up not putting your best into your written work.
