Money Affects How We Feel Pain

I don’t know who fits the bill for these ridiculous experiments, but it never ceases to amaze me what scientists and researchers manage to discover.

In an article on Discovery.com about how handling money could bring pain relief a study was done that shows that people who counted money before having their hands dipped in scalding water felt less pain (or didn’t seem to notice the pain as quickly) as those who were just handling paper or paperclips or nothing at all just before the test. In contrast, people who discussed 401K’s and having a lack of money were shown to feel greater pain when subjected to the same experiences.

We all know that for most people the thought of having lots of money can cause the brain to release hormones that make you feel good and happy, and dealing with financial stress or money issues will cause you to feel miserable. Since the brain controls the chemicals and hormones released to the body, then these same chemicals and hormones can damper/enhance the feeling of physical pain.

This only serves to prove that the brain and psychological influences can affect physical health, which is something that is known for quite a while.

All I know, is that I feel pain when paying my bills every month.

Bark Scorpions Rise Again

Two bark scorpions this week alone were found in the house and this means we will probably have a bad year for scorpions. I usually find about one or two in a month over the spring to fall months in our house. Since we have been living in this house we must have killed four dozen bark scorpions.

Note: Most forms of pest control cannot kill scorpions, they are immune to most poisons and the types of poison that kill bark scorpions can harm pets and children so you can’t really spray the inside of your house with the poison that is needed to actually terminate scorpions. Besides, bark scorpions don’t always come from your walls, they come from your toilet bowl, sinks and sometimes out from your electrical outlets.

Bark Scorpion

The bad thing is when we tiled and carpeted our house we chose brown carpets and wood colored flooring. The tan and yellow bark scorpions are so well camouflaged that we can barely make them out when they stand still. People always say you shouldn’t wear your shoes in the house, but scorpions are one of the reasons why I wear socks and sneakers in my house all day long when I am at home.

We are just extra cautious when picking up objects on the floor, they like to hide. Wooden blocks that the kids play with are often hiding spots for these sneaky monstrosities.

There are so many homes in disarray in the neighborhood that scorpions are plentiful, with crickets all over the area we can’t keep them from entering even with monthly pest control treatments. Ironically there is never a cricket in sight on my house, so this means they must be coming up from the drains. I always forget to keep my sinks plugged at night, not like this would help too much anyway because scorpions can flatten themselves out so well they can climb through nearly any hole.

One other note, if you catch a bark scorpion you have to squash it. I used about five folded sheets of paper towel to make too thick a barrier for them to sting through (or the bottom of your shoe). But rather than smash them into the carpet, I will pinch them up in the paper towel and squish them without messing up the carpets.

You can’t just flush them live in the toilet bowl because they are excellent swimmers and can survive up to 45 minutes completely submerged in water.

Can you handle living in a house invaded by scorpions? This is normal life here in the rural areas of the desert, I know some people who live in the Greater Phoenix area who never see scorpions, but we see them all the time.

Music on Mill Avenue Tonight

Tonight I will be on Mill Avenue with Rock Along Productions and Octive Radio who is hosting a live broadcast from the scene.  My wife who is the owner of Rock Along Productions does a segment on Octive Radio every Thursday nights and talks about local musicians, artists and events going on in the Greater Phoenix area.  Meanwhile, Mill Avenue which is the college scene for ASU features Music on Mill every Thursday night where musicians get to setup on just about every street corner over more than a mile and play live music for hours starting in the early afternoon.

I even bring my two boys along and my three year old loves handing out fliers for my wife’s next big show at the MadCap Theater on April 24th called Diamonds are A Girls Best Friend.  This is a show where the live band One Kitty Gone will be playing retro tunes and the film “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” will be screening.

New Dragon Confirmed in the Philippines

It is not everyday that a new species of land creature that measures over 6 1/2 feet in length is discovered. Sure fish, toads, small reptiles, insects and other new species are discovered all the time in the rain forests of Brazil or Indonesia. But back in 2004 when researchers captured a 6 1/2 foot long giant golden spotted monitor, they knew they discovered something special. It took several years of DNA tests to confirm but finally it has been revealed that the Golden Spotted Monitor lizard found in the Philippines is indeed a new species. The nearly 7 foot long lizard lives in the Sierra Madre mountains and primarily eats fruits and snails rather than carcasses like most other lizards of this size. It is a cousin to the Comodo dragon and its latin name is Varanus bitatawa.

Like many animals and reptiles it is in danger of destruction from the wide spread deforestation going on on the island and may be an endangered species if accurate counting of its numbers can be attained.

Added 3 New Video Presentations to YouTube

Last week I managed to find time to put together 3 video presentations on tips for bloggers.  I had made it one of my primary goals to try and do at least 2-3 video demonstrations per month to add to my blogs and grow my YouTube channel.  As I have a Everio HD Camcorder, I realize it takes me quite a bit of time to edit the videos which are in .MOD format, I have to use my Pinnacle Studio 14 to trim them up, add some titles and convert them to MP4 to upload to YouTube.

My Computer case fan and ceiling fan in my office provide surprising large amounts of background noise, and the microphone on my camera doesn’t pick up my voice from 5′ away as well as I like so I need to do some more tweaking to get the audio right.  Pinnacle Studio 14 does not filter out background noise nearly as well as Camtasia Studio does, but Camtasia Studio won’t import an MP4 file created from Pinnacle Studio 14 nor will it work with the .MOD files directly so it would take far too much time to have to convert to AVI, then edit in Camtasia, then convert back to MP4 to upload to YouTube.

In the meantime, here was my video about your blogging reputation:

Saw John Paris at Zia Records Yesterday

I help out with my wife’s music production company Rock Along Productions as often as I can and this usually involves doing blog work, web site maintenence, graphics design and running door at her concerts and events.  One highlight was being able to meet John Paris the drummer from Earth Wind & Fire over the past two days as Rock Along Productions helped sponsor and promote a free drum clinic at Zia Records in Chandler, Arizona.  John Paris came in to show drum techniques and even jammed with a local teenage band who was put together by Drum Lessons Arizona.

One of the perks of working for my wife’s music production company is I also get to meet great local musicians and see them play live (often) and occasionally I get to meet and see a celebrity.  The great thing was we brought my six year old son (who is in drum lessons) to the Drum Clinic and this will be an experience he won’t ever forget.

Tips for Formatting Blog Posts

I don’t like calling other bloggers or websites out often to point out something that I think is wrong or can be improved up, but when I followed a tweet to an article on Entrepreneur Heat I was blasted with a 1900+ word article that was all a single massive paragraph.

This is only a snippet of 40% of the article length but the entire article ran on like the above. There was not a single paragraph break, image, bullet list or anything to break up the massive run on of words.

Now, the article itself was to promote 27 Inspiring Young Online Entrepreneurs and I took the time to read the article and thought the information and people it presented were good, but the format on the blog was nearly insufferable.

I show this as an example on what your blog posts should look like, no matter how good your content is there will be eye strain to try and read so many words on a website in this format. A website or blog is not like a novel or book, your eyes suffer more strain looking at a computer screen than a blank white page, and the acronyms, twitter ID’s and other information just serve to make it harder to decipher the information easily.

When writing blog posts you should do the following:

  • Include paragraph spaces, don’t let any single paragraph run on for more than 200 to 400 words maximum. It is okay to have shorter but don’t have too short paragraphs either.
  • Include bullet lists or different font sizes if you are highlighting specific categories, lists or details that should stand out.
  • Insert the occasional graphic if you have a really long article to help break up the monotony of words, even a small 125 – 150 pixel image that words wrap around goes a long way.
  • Write only as much as you need to, there is no need to have run on sentences or start sharing information unrelated to the article. Keep your articles concise and to the point to avoid boring your readers which can make them leave before they finish the article.

These are just some tips that I share with my readers and there are many other tips out there. Who has some of their favorite tips for writing blog articles? Share your tips here in the comments, what works for you?

Do The Best You Can At Everything

One thing that has always been my drive in life no matter what I do is that I strive to do the best at anything I undertake.  This drive for perfectionism has left me with many disappointments when I realized that on some subjects and area’s I just simply am not suited or strong in and when that is the case, it is time to find something new.  You never know what you will be able to achieve unless you give something your 100% (there is nothing higher, I always hated the give 110% or 200% saying).

If you are giving your 100% at your job, marriage, parenting or any other responsibilities in your life you will learn more about yourself and can take pride in that you are giving your best effort in whatever you do.  If you choose to slack off why settle even if you could get away with it?

Now if you are genuinely giving 100% and still not reaching satisfaction or success in what you are doing, it may be time to reconsider if there is something different (a unique approach) or something else you are more suited to do.

I realized a long time ago that I am not a very “handy” guy, my natural clumsiness and phobia of heights don’t make me suited to do large home improvement projects or hardware related work.  My lack of artistic skills prevented me from pursing my goal of becoming a painter, sculptor or computer 3D animator.  You learn what you are good at and what you have talent for, and you can only know by doing the best you can at everything you do.  You will find what you are really good at.

Software Review Requests Pile In

Dragon Blogger Technology and Entertainment portal focuses not only on blogging and SEO Tips, but I also do as many articles about technology related products or services as my readers know.  I am receiving at least five requests per week now to review software, shareware and freeware from dozens of developers and software companies.  Nearly all are looking to generate buzz and asking for a free review or article to help raise awareness about their program or product.

My time for blogging is vastly reduced lately, but I still write a post for free on a software or freeware program or service if I think it has benefit for my readers (I can’t get paid for every product or software review) and for ones that I don’t mind promoting but would like something extra to add incentive I will ask the company to usually provide a full product license that I can giveaway to one of my readers so the post can become a contest and have a higher chance of generating buzz and inciting comments.

Many software companies are not keen on making “payment” for blog posts, but if their software has a license cost of $25 or $50, then having them provide you with a free license to use personally or to giveaway to your readers is just as good as receiving a payment (if it is a software you will find yourself using).  As an advertiser I commend them for finding as many blogs as they can directly to write about the product, they should just know that the more popular blogs which probably receive dozens if not hundreds of requests per week will need some extra incentive to review a software or freeware product.

Steve Carrell and Tina Fey in Date Night

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of 20th Century Fox. All opinions are 100% mine.

I am a huge fan of both Steve Carrell (The Office, 40 Year Old Virgin) and Tina Fey (30 Rock, Baby Momma) and when I first saw the previews of the Date Night Movie which releases on Friday April 9th, my wife and I both knew that this is a movie we are definitely going to see. The chance to see both of these great comedians working together in a film that looks genuinely creative and funny should provide a good night out for anyone who is a fan of comedies.

The movie is about a couple who when going out for a routine date night gets mistaken for some criminals and ends up in a twisted cat/mouse game where they are trying to stay alive. The endure a car chase, shootout and a showdown with an underground boss. Nothing like a little excitement to spice up a marriage that has gone a little complacent was the thinking Shawn Levy the directory of Date Night and who also directed Night at the Museum and Cheaper by the dozen, this film looks to be highly entertaining and have plenty of laughs.

I encourage my readers to watch the trailer for the movie Date Night here:

What do you think of the preview?
How many Steve Carrell and/or Tina Fey fans are going out to see this movie on opening weekend?
