Christmas Decorations Coming Soon

Can it be that time already?  This is the last weekend before I start decorating for the holidays and though it won’t be nearly a spectacle like it was in previous years (don’t have enough dedicated circuits yet) I am still looking forward to decorating for the holidays and it being a little more like Christmas around here.

Several neighbors already had Christmas lights up for a week already and they clearly got a jump on the holidays.  The radio stations are poised to start playing Christmas music any day now, 99.9 KEZ does 24 x 7 Christmas music usually starting the week of Thanksgiving and of course Sirius Radio starts doing some Christmas music channels.

My wife was looking at the Cee-Lo Green Christmas album to pick up this year and start playing as well as I purchased tickets for the two of us to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra on December 1st which we are looking forward to.

In the meantime, I drudged up some Christmas decorating we have done in  years past just to show some previous decorating.

Blog Engage Thousand Dollar Guest Blogging Contest

I have been looking forward to the $1,000 Guest Blogging Contest all year as Blog Engage had done this massive guest blogging contest last year as well.  This contest is a great way for bloggers and writers to try and make some money as well as learning and putting their marketing and promotional skills to the test.

I have two articles I submitted in previous guest blogging contests on Blog Engage, I won 2nd and 3rd place entries but have never won a 1st place entry in 2012.  I am hoping I can promote and get one of these articles to take the top spot and win the full $1,000 USD cash prize for hosting the most successful guest article on Blog Engage for 2012.

It isn’t too late for new contestants to come in and submit new articles, it is possible for a new guest blogger or article to come in and steal the show if you have what it takes.  I won’t lie though, there is an advantage to some of the earliest articles submitted in guest blogging contests held previously especially the previous 1st place winners have a head start toward the $1,000 cash prize which I covet.

If I win the prize, I am going to put 1/2 of it toward another Laptop Giveaway on DragonBlogger.com in 2013 so if you help me win I will be giving back to my fans and readers!

My two articles are:

This article talks about bloggers who may be tired, suffer burnout or get random offers from people who may have serious interest in buying their blog.  Whether you want to list your site on Flippa or have no intention of selling your site, most at some point have considered it or maybe got luck enough to see an offer that made you pause and consider a selling point.

Visit the article, read it, share it and let me know what you think!

This article asks if at some point spam management and comment management becomes too cumbersome should you just shut the conversation off for readers like Nick Denton suggested previously.  Share your thoughts on how you handle comment moderation, rules, expectations and if you keep the conversations alive.

Again, visit, read and let me know what you think!

Here are all the awesome sponsors who helped make this $1,000 Guest Blogging contest possible!

Upgraded Minecraft to 1.4.4

A slew of bug fixes were released in Minecraft 1.4.4 so I upgraded the server I am running for my boys and I on Servercraft.co with the latest version.  Last night we played for several hours and found the largest underground cave I have seen yet in a random seed world.

Finally though it appears as if my oldest son is getting a little burnt out on Minecraft as he appears to have more interest in Skylanders Giants lately and for the first time wanted to do something other than playing Minecraft on his spare time.

Had a Good Time at Universal Studios Hollywood

For Veterans Day Weekend we had taken the family to Universal Studios Hollywood and had a blast, it was my first time at the California location of Universal Studios and the whole family had a good time as we spent about 8 hours there and got to see nearly every attraction except the Jurassic Park ride which was closed down for maintenance.

Krustyland Universal Studios

I got to ride in Krustyland a very clever Simpsons ride which had entertaining clips of the seasons while you stood in line.  In fact all of the major attractions had very clever waiting area’s designed to entertain you while you wait and make the wait a little less cumbersome.  The waits can be long 45 minutes to 1 and a half hours toward the middle of the day, but we were there when the park opened and there was no wait for the first ride which was Transformers 3D Dark of the Moon.

The Transformers ride was incredible and you really felt like you were inside an Autobot traveling at high speeds, feeling the heat from a missile blast.  There was a few moments where my height phobia started kicking in and I genuinely felt a little panic.

Optimus-Justin-Oliver

Overall the whole family loved the Universal Studios Back Lot tour the most especially with the King Kong 360 experience, the Earthquake under the train station, Flood and War of the Worlds crash scene drive through.  It was so fun seeing the various set pieces and how some special effects were put together.

Happy Birthday to my Youngest Son

My youngest son Oliver turns 6 years old today and I am so excited that I will be presenting him with Skylanders: Giants the one game he wanted most for his birthday.

Since Oliver is still in Kindergarten and only has half days of school I am taking some time off work to have some one on one time gaming with him (Probably Lego Batman 2 or Minecraft) before he is presented with his birthday gifts in the evening.

I can’t believe I am the father of a 9 and 6 year old now, I feel time slipping away too quickly sometimes and it seems like only yesterday I was carrying Oliver around in the pouch with him dangling on my chest.

Tonight we dine at Peter Piper’s Pizza, not that I love the Pizza but it is the closest place that has arcades and the kids really love it.  I wish they had a Dave & Buster’s or an Amazing Jake’s here in Casa Grande.

Elephants Can Mimic Human Speech

There are few animals that can mimic human speech on the planet, of course most of them are in the bird family with Parrots, Cockatoo’s and others being the most famous when you think of an animal that can say human words.

image

It was recently discovered and confirmed that one Asian elephant can say 5 korean words including: "aniya" ("no"), "nuo" ("lie down"), "choah" ("good"), "annyong" ("hello") and "anja" ("sit down") you have to consider how incredible this discovery is and what this means that Elephants have this capability.

That’s right, this is a talking elephant and this elephant capable of speech has been trained and raised in captivity since 1990, the elephant named Koshik was trained to understand commands in Korean.  But the implications behind what the elephant must do to speak clear words is what is astounding.  An elephant cannot normally vocalize human speech at all, this elephant inserts it’s trunk into it’s mouth manipulating its vocal cavity to allow it to mimic these five words.  The fact that it learned to insert it’s trunk into it’s mouth to modify it’s speech capability is something that no other animal has demonstrated.  They haven’t  yet determined if the Elephant has understanding of the words it is saying or if it is just parroting / imitating the words to forge a bond with it’s handlers but if it does indeed understand meaning or proper usage of the word it would join the African Grey Parrot as the 2nd animal to understand some words that it mimics I believe.

To my knowledge in researching only a Seal and a Beluga whale were other mammals that have been shown capable of imitating human speech to where it can be understood and mistaken for a person talking.

This is indeed astounding and in my opinion we often underestimate the intelligence of animals just because they can’t perform our testing assuming they don’t have that intelligence factor.  Elephants may end up being the smartest living land animal next to human beings.

How to Better Integrate Technology Into Your Office

When you think about your office layouts and how you want your staff to be organized, it’s important to be aware of just how much this is likely to impact the way they work. Everything from their immediate surroundings, to how easily they can reach the supplies and tools they need, to who they’re working near can have a direct and drastic impact on things like their productivity and their workplace satisfaction.

Most managers and CEOs of course are aware of these factors of course, but what they are more likely to forget often is the way that they integrate technology into these layouts. An office is basically a space for staff to sit and work at their computers, and that’s what they’re going to be spending most of their time doing. If your office layout isn’t conducive to this then, then it’s not really going to be fit for purpose.

At the same time though, rather than just making your office fit for purpose when it comes to integrating it with your technology, why not make it better than that and ensure that your office is perfectly suited to using technology and that you use it in new and more creative ways? Here we will look at some ways you can do this.

Multiple Screens

In this day and age, few of us work on just one device or with just one monitor. Rather, the vast majority of us will have computers, smart phones and tablets all running at once and all vying for our attention at any given time. While this can sometimes lead to a sensory overload, at other times it can be very useful for multitasking and for bringing up notifications without stopping what we’re doing.

This is something that will vary from person to person, but the general point is that you should create the facilities for people to use more than one monitor if they want, or for them to rig up their tablet somewhere where they can see and interact with it easily. Create the conditions in your office for people to work with multiple monitors and input devices by giving them the space they need on their desk and by providing tiers. If your staff request multiple monitors then give them to them, and if they don’t they ask if they could benefit from anything else. It’s about being individual and it’s about being able to take advantage of more modern set ups.

Get Up and Move

A lot of desks are very static in offices and this sees a lot of workers sitting in the same position all day which isn’t great for their spine or their general state of psychological health. Giving your staff the opportunity to move around the office and to sit on other seating that you’ve provided is a great way to keep their blood flowing and to prevent them getting bored, so set up some laptops and tablets and let them work from those – don’t get stuck on the idea of PCs.

You should also create some different work spaces for your staff when you arrange your office fitouts. This could mean a bean bag area where they can recline or chat, or it might mean a reclining chair. Consider using a network or cloud set up too so that your staff aren’t restricted to using only their one device and can access their files from wherever.

Kindle Fire HD or iPad Mini

Sure the giant ad on the Amazon.com homepage showcasing Gizmodo’s quote and and the prize/pixel comparison side by side of the Kindle Fire HD and iPad Mini may have grabbed your attention.

image

The Kindle Fire HD does have a better resolution display compared to the iPad Mini and has better Wi-Fi reception allegedly.  One thing however that Amazon cannot argue with is the iTunes app store is vastly superior to the Amazon Android app store which in itself is tiny compared to the Google Play Android store.

Amazon also is a portal/platform for selling content, if you are a huge Amazon shopper and have a Prime account then the Kindle Fire is a great device.  Reading magazines, books, watching Amazon Prime video content or even Netflix is easy and fantastic.

The other player not mentioned however is the Google Nexus 7 which is the same price as the Kindle Fire HD and on much better hardware, but the Kindle Fire HD is a step above the Kindle Fire for sure.  If you tested all 3 tablets side by side though you will find the Kindle Fire HD is a little more sluggish than the iPad Mini, though more user friendly than the Google Nexus 7.

The choice is simple, breadth of content, speed, simplicity then the iPad Mini is your game, only you justify if it is worth the extra cost.

If you want customization, more applications, power at a slight cost of a more complex user interface (great power comes great responsibility) then the Google Nexus 7 is your best bet.

If you want an Amazon ecosystem with very simple interface, a ton of video/music content but don’t mind a bit less app/game choices then the Kindle Fire HD is your winner.

I would vote for the Google Nexus 7 myself but I would have no problem getting Kindle Fire HD devices for my kids to upgrade from their current Kindle Fires.

Published First Kindle Poetry Book

Just less than two weeks ago I finally published my first Kindle Poetry Book Wanderer Thoughts Poetry Volume I which is a collection of 100 of my earlier Twitter poems hand selected and showcased for readers.  I learned a few things about Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) and one thing is that direct uploading from Word to Kindle format isn’t ideal for several reason.

I proofed my poem book on the Kindle but not the Kindle Fire, Whitepaper…etc.  and I really should have proofed it on all because some of the formatting was lost and my page breaks didn’t exactly stay intact the whole way through.  However all of the material was there and presented in a readable format.

I originally was worried about not having images to go along with the poem, but forgot that all images are converted to black and white which makes them near pointless anyway so my focus on finding quality images for the poems really was a waste for Kindle publishing.

Amazon mentioned support for Mobipocket Creator and I have decided to try composing my 2nd poetry volume in Mobipocket Creator and see if the Direct Publishing will come up better and match the formatting better.

In the meantime, my first poetry volume is on sale for .99 cents or you can rent for free from the Prime lending library, but I have yet to sell a single copy which is a bit disappointed as it was prompting from my fans on Twitter who convinced me to release a poetry volume.
