Getting Back Into Wii Fit Routine

I had let my Wii Fit routine slip over the past months and have decided to recommit to doing 20 minutes of Wii Fit every morning at 6 – 6:30am before I start working and my son goes to school.  I was not happy when I saw that my weight had increased over the past few months and have to work harder to make sure I keep at this routine.  It is a constant battle to find the time and energy to work out but in the end it is always worth it.  It is kind of ironic I had been benching consistently and doing heavy lifting every other day, but the aerobics from Wii Fit are still needed for extra calorie burn.

Taking Family Out For Mother’s Day

I will be taking my family out to a new steak house on Sunday night at the Pink Pony in Scottsdale, My wife, Mother in Law, Father in Law, two kids and myself enjoy taking the family out for special occasions to celebrate together. Sure it might not be as fancy and exciting as giving the gift of diamond rings but it is at least something we all can partake in as a family.

Mother’s day is a celebration not only of ones own Mother, but anyone who is a Mother. Especially if your wife or partner bore your children, she deserves to be appreciated for such a grand expression of affection. I hope everyone out there celebrates the mothers in their life on Sunday.

Our Dogs Over The Hill Party

My family is throwing our soon to be eight year old male Boston Terrier an Over the Hill party this weekend, Gouda the dog turns eight years old on Monday May 11th and we didn’t know if he would survive to his eight birthday with having a spinal stroke late last year and being paralyzed for three weeks in his right rear leg.

The family is treating him to some “Frosty Paws” doggie ice cream, some blown up balloons which he loves to chase, some dog treats (Pig’s ears and rope toys are his favorite) and just a general celebration of his wonderful contribution to our family.

Gouda has been with the family through three moves and has seen the birth of both children and is just about the best pet a family can have. He sleeps in bed with us every night with his younger Boston Terrier buddy, and they are more like our children than pets.

So do you think we are crazy, or just really love our pets? What are some funny things you have done for your pet cat, dog, bird or lizard to celebrate them being part of your family?

I want to hear from you, so leave a comment.

Update:

Bumble Blog talks about how much she loves her cat and how she cuddles with her cat for hours.

Excessive Violence In Media

First I would like to declare that I am against censorship completely and believe that artists (directors) who create films, TV shows and the like should have the ability to express their art however they see fit. That being said I am for ratings of films if they mean something, but the problem is film ratings mean less and less these days.

There used to be a standard expectation between G, PG, PG-13 and R Rated films and the lines between PG-13 and R have become so blurred that it feels like the movies are either PG or R without any PG-13 in the middle. Too often movies that target younger teenage audiences have content that is more suited for adults in an effort to pander to both types of audiences and maximize on returns at the box office.

You can’t really fault the artist an R rating is almost a death sentence to movies looking for a teenage audience just as much as an NC-17 rating is pretty much the death rating of a film entirely at the box office. Yet we find our society in a situation where violence is seen as much more acceptable and normal in a film, yet love and romance is often elevated to a higher rating status.

Films in general have gotten much more graphic in the last fifteen or so years with rarely seeing actual throats getting slit, or body parts flying off. Previously you were seen the action just prior, and the end result (toned down) rather than the act itself with such realism you mine as well show it actually happening.

Personally I don’t mind for myself and never really cared about content in films, but your whole aspect on films and television shows changes when you have children (or it should change, if it doesn’t I am concerned). Children want to watch what other kids watch, yet most movies and TV shows about Superheroes and such are way above a little kids appropriate age, and yet most comic books which they read or cartoons of the same heroes are within their range so they feel left out.

I often wondered if they should make two different versions of a film, like a PG cut version of every R rated film and release it at the theater simultaneously. For example they edit the films to make them PG rated to fit on Television broadcasts, why not release a younger kid friendly version of Xmen Origins: Wolverine at the same time to capitalize on the younger audience at the same time as the adult audience. Heck you may even get people who want to see both versions of the film if you release some different content in each version that may alter the experience slightly.

Either way the ratings systems are not accurate enough and too many PG-13 films should probably get an R rating, they are slipping much more violence, language and nudity into PG-13 films than they did five or ten years ago it seems. The lines are blurring and it makes it harder as a parent to decide what your child can or cannot watch without screening it yourself.

Everyone Should Play An Instrument

My family is a firm believer that everyone should have at least some musical instruction and learning in their lifetime, as children it is proven that learning to play music helps academically as well as socially. My father was a drummer and I grew up with a full 7 piece drum set in my house, but for some reason I never had aptitude to play the drums.

I did however want to learn how to play the keyboard or take piano lessons when I was a child, I had naturally dexterous fingers and was a very quick typer I figured I would have some ability at playing the piano. Alas though for one reason or another it never panned out and other than learning to play the Recorder, and Xylophone in school, I don’t really know how to play a musical instrument which is one of my regrets.

Eventually I would like to find the time to learn how to play the Guitar, or piano but for now my schedule is not capable of fitting this in. Our son however who is five years old is in drum lessons, he chose what instrument he wanted to learn and he has an aptitude for it. Already being able to read drum notes he is getting better every week and it is a good thing.

The Moral of Yes Man is Enjoying Life

I saw the movie “Yes Man” the other night and I thought it was one of Jim Carrey’s best movie in years, funny, crude with all the silliness that made him popular the movie also had a good moral to the story which is you shouldn’t let life pass you by. This in turn is really a good thing, we all only have one lifetime some of us don’t even get an entire lifetime and are lives are tragically cut short.

We can’t afford to put off the bucket list, or things we want to to before we pass on from this world. It doesn’t matter if you are in your twenties, thirties or sixties you make lists of all the things you want to see or do in life and you should start working toward checking those things off of your list. Be a little adventurous once and a while and mix life up.

I can say that I have done and seen quite a few things over my last few decades but there are still dozens if not hundreds of things I want to do and try and I am continuing to work toward checking each one off my mental list.

Saw Some Movies About Dogs

In the last week I have seen two dog theme related movies including Marley & Me and Hotel for Dogs, as an owner of two Boston terriers (my wife’s favorite breed and now mine as well). We are both dog lovers, I do love cats too but there is just something about dogs and how they bond with people and families that makes them so special.

Marley & Me was a great movie, although it was about Marley, the movie was about how relationships and people grow over time and Marley was the centerpiece on which the characters grew around and developed. It was a touching movie with a terribly sad (you knew it was coming) ending that had tears welling in my eyes. I highly recommend this movie for dog lovers or anyone who enjoys seeing couples movies.

Hotel for Dogs was more for a younger audience but was enjoyable nonetheless, kids take up stray dogs in an abandoned hotel to prevent them from going to the city pound. The dog breeds are great, the gadgets invented to keep the dogs happy and to train them was fun too. The ironic thing is every dog is a pure breed, almost one of every different type and the odds of so many pure breeds being strays in the same area had us laughing. Still was a fun movie and my five year old and two year old kids loved it and kept saying the Boston Terrier in the film looks like our Gouda and Porky.

For those who don’t know, here is Gouda and Porky (Porky is Black and White, and Gouda is the Brindle):
